Port of Cromarty Firth in Scotland has signed a memorandum of understanding with Norwegian company Gen2 Energy to create a commercial pathway to import green hydrogen from Norway into the UK energy market. The partnership will provide a security of supply for the Cromarty Firth’s own plans for a large-scale electrolyser facility, and will guarantee green hydrogen to those that want access to the clean energy by mid-2023, the port said. Energy trader Vitol has acquired a 10% equity interest in Gen2 Energy, a Norwegian producer of green hydrogen, for an undisclosed sum. Gen2 Energy aims to use Norway’s surplus hydroelectric power to produce green hydrogen which will be transported and sold to customers in Europe. Work at the company’s initial site in the north of Norway is underway and once complete it will have a capacity of at least 80MW, producing 11.7 kilotonnes of green hydrogen annually.
