Sister Abhaya murder case: life in jail for priest, nun


A special CBI court in Kerala on Wednesday sentenced a Catholic priest and a nun who were found guilty of murdering Sister Abhaya, a teenaged nun, to life terms, ending a legal battle that dragged for close to three decades.
The court sentenced Father Thomas Kottoor, 73, to life in jail for murder and trespass to commit a punishable offence and another seven years for destroying evidence.
Sister Sephy, 57, was handed the life term for murder and another seven years in jail for destroying evidence.
Each of them was slapped with a penalty of Rs 5 lakh under IPC Section 302 (murder) and Rs 50,000 each under IPC Section 201 (destruction of evidence). ....

After 28 Years, CBI Court convicts Priest & Nun in Sister Abhaya Case

Thiruvananthapuram: In the 28 year old Sister Abhaya murder case, a court in Kerala pronounced a guilty verdict on Monday.
A Special CBI Court in Thiruvananthapuram found Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy, a priest and nun of the Catholic Church respectively, guilty of murder in the case.
The details of the reasoning and the findings of the court will be known after the full copy of the judgment is released.
Special CBI Judge K Sanal Kumar, who handed down the guilty verdict, will pronounce the sentence for the convicts tomorrow. Kottoor has been found guilty for offences under Sections 302(murder), 201(destruction of evidence) and 449(criminal trespass) of the Indian Penal Code .Sephy was held guilty for offences under Sections 302 and 201 IPC. ....

A special CBI court on Tuesday pronounced a Catholic priest and a nun guilty of the murder of Sister Abhaya whose body was found in a well at a convent in Kerala’s Kottayam district 28 years ago.
The case, involving the brutal murder of the 19-year-old Sister Abhaya after she saw two priests in a compromising position with a nun in a convent in 1992, witnessed many twists and turns as witnesses turned hostile and multiple investigative agencies wrote it off as a suicide, provoking protests.

A court in southern India has sentenced a Catholic priest and a nun to life imprisonment for murdering a 19-year-old novice nun and dumping her body in a well more than 28 years ago.
The convicts, 71-year-old Father Thomas Kottoor of Kottayam Archdiocese and 57-year-old Sister Sephy, were present in the special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a federal agency, when the sentence was announced on Dec. 23 in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala state. ....
