Police officer. so he can just, you know, return as much as he can to normal life, whatever that may be for him at this point. there s also a federal civil rights investigation that is still ongoing that he could potentially face charges in that and the brown family still deciding if they will file a civil lawsuit against him. now, what is the plan tomorrow for ferguson? you talked to us earlier about this. a long time before they get back to normal but what is the plan for tomorrow, security plan even we know at least some schools will be out. reporter: right, schools here in the ferguson area will be closed today and for the rest of the week because of the thanksgiving holiday but did close schools for today in response to this announcement being made. as far as security, i think that police are planning to hold a news conference here hopefully we ll get an idea of what their plans are, what can be done differently to make sure there is not a repeat of what we saw here last night ....

Tonight, the national guard, the fbi here to offer backup. as far as what they were able to do, you know, they were out there in force, we know that they did fire smoke canisters to try to disperse the crowd. that s when they fired tear gas to get the crowd under control. as you see from the images it didn t work in all instances. of course, marci, what was the logic in announcing the decision this evening? reporter: as with a lot of people asking, why did they wait until tonight, nightfall to make this announcement when they knew for most of the day that a decision was reached. we still have not heard a response or explanation to that. marci gonzalez there live for us in clayton, missouri. we appreciate you being with us this evening. we re going to check back in with you in a little bit. thanks so much. we ll check in with another reporter talking about the decision sparking protest in other american cities. that s right. josh haskell is tracking what s happening elsewhere. w ....

They have been peaceful. although they have been chanting many of the things we ve heard in ferguson hands up, don t shoot and that had been similar to what we ve seen in ferguson. there have not been burning buildings or arrests or tear gas, anything along those lines thankfully. abc s josh haskell thank you as always. as these continue. lead prosecutor has taken a lot of heat for all he handled the case. we get more from abc chief legal affairs anchor dan abrams. reporter: they ve been supporting the grand jury decision not saying that, saying he handed it off to the grand jury and refused all the evidence objectively but the way he sounded sounded as if he was backing up the grand jury. supporting them. in exactly what they decided and how they decided it and now we have this huge dump of information that they have now released to the public. very unusual to release all this grand jury material so in theory the public can decide for themselves and understand the prosecutor hopes ....
