DOT names top 'tourism villages' in Cordillera

BEST TOURISM VILLAGE. Village leaders of the Hapao-Baang-Nungulunan clustered tourism village in Hungduan town, Ifugao province accept the top prize as the Best Cordillera Tourism Village in a competition by the Department of Tourism-Cordillera, during a ceremony at the Baguio Country Club on Wednesday (Feb, 8, 2023). DOT-Cordillera regional director Jovita Ganongan (leftmost) said the best tourism village contest is in line with the agency's efforts to promote "Filipinism." (PNA photo by Liza T. Agoot) BAGUIO CITY - The Department of Tourism in the Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR) has recognized new and emerging village destinations in the region with rich cultural values in line with the department's direction toward "Filipinism." Named by the DOT-CAR as the Best Cordillera Tourism Village was the clustered "tourism village" of Nungulunan, Hapao and Baang in Hungduan town, Ifugao province. "Tourists will get to experience an old-time tradition of celebration after harvest which is called the 'punnok.' They will also get the chance to be part of a 'canao,' the practice of woodcarving and 'panpanday' or blacksmith," said Nungulunan barangay chairperson Rodolgo Dong-e on what awaits tourists who would visit their village. He said they also have activities that will immerse the tourists in the cultural practices that their people are still doing. Aside from preserving and spreading their culture, Dong-e noted how their local economy also gets a boost from tourism activities. With the recognition, the tourism village received a plaque, token, and a PHP1 million prize. Coming in second place was the Pidilisan Village in Sagada, Mt. Province, which received PHP500,000. In third spot was the Naneng Heritage Village in Bauko town, Mountain Province, which received a PHP200,000 prize. The villages that landed on the fourth to the eight spot each got PHP100,000. Twenty-eight villages were entered in the contest for consideration, and 12 were shortlisted. "Maria Esperanza Christina Garcia Frasco's (DOT Secretary) idea and strategy is to put tourism in the limelight with the launching of the Philippine experience to promote destinations anchored on culture," said Jovita Ganongan, regional director of the DOT-CAR, during the awarding ceremonies on Wednesday. "Among Secretary Frasco's thrusts is developing tourism from the ground, enabling communities to embrace tourism, creating tourism experiences that carry Filipino brand and identity," she added. She emphasized the importance of promoting "Filipinism" in highlighting "who we are as people and as Filipinos." "We need to involve more stakeholders to ramp up our effort of developing Cordillera as a tourism destination north of Metro Manila," Ganongan said. She said tourism breathes life into the villages and communities, and should be sustainable to ensure that their heritage will not be exploited. "When communities take pride in the endeavor, there becomes a sense of ownership that we permit a sense of pride and empowerment. This will pave the way for tourism to become a major economic driver, uplifting the lives of each member of the community while ensuring that our culture and traditions are continuously celebrated evolving thru the times but grounded on the community values that have allowed us to be united and proud," Ganongan said. Ganongan, during the media appreciation night after the awarding ceremony, highlighted the role of the media in the promotion of the different tourist destinations aside from the village tourism sites that helps in the achievement of the administration's vision in making the Philippines the powerhouse. "We would like to thank you for producing stories that amplify the effort of the DOT-CAR to position the region as a tourism destination outside Metro Manila. Your stories allow the regions' destinations to widen reach especially since our job requires intensive promotion and marketing which the DOT does not have." (PNA) }

Cordillera drums up efforts to lure tourists back

Banaue Rice Terraces. (File photo) BAGUIO CITY - The Department of Tourism (DOT) - Cordillera said Friday it has begun its campaign to encourage more tourists to return to the region after restrictions brought by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic have been relaxed. "We are ready to put Cordillera out there. We have been waiting for this, to announce the opening and re-launch of the region as a destination," Jovita Ganongan, DOT-Cordillera director, said during a press conference here. Ganongan said they spent the lockdown period improving their facilities, tidying up tourist spots, integrating safety guidelines, and further capacitating tourism workers. "We know that the lockdown was temporary and soon the world will open up and resume activities so we have to prepare. We put out our destinations so that the people will include them in the bucket list," she said. Activities and training were conducted for accommodation establishments, restaurants, travel and tour group, promoters, tour guides, food servers and handlers, establishment front-line personnel, local government tourism officers, and others who will be attending to the tourists. There was also value-adding training to increase the importance of a commodity or location aside from giving entertainment or joy. "We had to continue increasing the standards and quality of the workers because the competition does not stop," Ganongan said. She said they also introduced virtual guided tours during the lockdown to encourage tourists to visit the destination in-person once restrictions are lifted. Ganongan said Baguio City has continued to record high tourism arrivals this year but pre-pandemic numbers have yet to be reached. Pre-pandemic, Cordillera recorded an annual average of 2.28 million tourists, which dropped by 83 percent in 2020 and further went down by 24.75 percent in 2021. (PNA) }

DOT wants more Igorot culture in CAR tourism experience

NATIVE MASSAGE. Guests enjoy a traditional "kolkolis" or foot massage during the re-opening of the Mt. Data Hotel in Bauko, Mountain Province on May 5, 2022. Department of Tourism-Cordillera Administrative Region Director Jovita Ganongan on Wednesday (May 18, 2022) encouraged businesses to include more of the Igorot culture in the services they offer to tourists. (PNA photo by Liza T. Agoot) BAGUIO CITY - The Department of Tourism in the Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR) wants the Igorot culture to be promoted more to tourists visiting the region. "We should offer a very unique experience, very Igorot, to tourists so that they see the beauty of the culture of the people in the Cordillera," DOT-CAR regional director Jovita Ganongan said in an interview on Wednesday. Ganongan said tourists should be made to experience and appreciate the rituals, chants, dances, attire, and food of the Cordillera. Among the famous Cordilleran attire are the tapis and the G-string which are carefully handcrafted by the locals using crude methods that show the locals' ingenuity. She said tourists should be encouraged to try them on or try using manually operated loom weaving equipment used to make them. She said that the DOT-CAR has also come up with the "slow food" tourism circuit where tourists get to try local food made from indigenous or local ingredients. "We have food in every place which is authentic in every province of the region or the municipalities," Ganongan said, citing as an example pinikpikan, a native system of cooking chicken flavored with the "etag" (smoked/ sundried meat). She said that they are also promoting "forest bathing," which allows the participants to commune with nature. Ganongan also said that the newly re-opened historic Mt. Data hotel in Bauko, Mountain Province offers the traditional massage called "kolkolis" or foot massage, the "tal-taladtad" or body massage, and the "gis-gisto" or head massage. "I have asked those who do them at the hotel to explain what it is so that the tourists would know," she added. (PNA) }

CAR promotes circuit tourism featuring food, culture, nature

TOURISM CIRCUIT. The Department of Tourism in the Cordillera Administrative Region promotes destinations like this famous spot for bird watching in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao for its "circuit tourism." This type of tourism covers the region's different provinces and takes tourists to different attractions from Baguio City and the flower and vegetable gardens of Benguet, to Mountain Province, Ifugao, Apayao, Kalinga, and Abra provinces. (PNA file photo by Liza T. Agoot) BAGUIO CITY - The Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Cordillera Administrative Region urged tourists to try "circuit tourism" in the region featuring its food, culture, nature, and other destinations. Jovita Ganongan, regional director of the DOT-CAR, in a telephone interview on Sunday night, said their office has prepared a circuit tourism destination that loops between the different provinces and this city. "We are now developing new products in the region and strengthening old ones. We have tourism products that are anchored on nature, culture, and adventure," she said. She said the circuit includes the vegetable and flower farms along the Halsema Highway traversing Benguet's capital town La Trinidad towards the flower gardens of Atok municipality and the vegetable farms in Buguias. It will lead straight to Mountain Province where the newly re-opened Mt. Data Hotel can serve as an overnight stop or a destination in itself. Leading further to the north is the famous Sagada which offers natural attractions like caves and waterfalls, and a majestic sunrise view. From there, tourists can take a less than three-hour drive to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization world heritage site Ifugao rice terraces. "There are so many activities that we have in the pipeline now," Ganongan said. She said that the DOT has also included the moto caravan which starts in Baguio City then goes to Atok farms, and makes a stop in Bauko, before heading to Banaue in Ifugao. "The TIEZA (Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority) has re-opened Mt. Data Hotel, which now will serve as a crucial tourism facility that could host domestic and international tourism which will benefit not only the tourism industry of Mountain Province and the Cordillera but the entire country as well," she said.
