New Delhi [India], April 23 (ANI): Zydus Cadila received emergency use approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) on Friday for the use of 'Virafin', Pegylated Interferon alpha-2b (PegIFN) in treating moderate COVID-19 infection in adults.
A single-dose subcutaneous regimen of the antiviral Virafin will make the treatment more convenient for the patients. When administered early on during COVID-19, Virafin will help patients recover faster and avoid much of the complications, the company said.
In a release, Cadila Health highlighted that "the drug has also shown efficacy against other viral infections."

New Delhi [India], April 23 (ANI): The production of COVID-19 vaccines approved by the government is getting augmented and there is a promising pipeline of vaccine candidates and it will not be difficult to fulfill the obligation of vaccinating those over 18 years of age, a senior government official has said.
Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, told ANI that the regulators have permitted stockpiling of doses before Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) so that the vaccines can be rolled out once approval is accorded.

New Delhi [India], April 21 (ANI): A rapid rise in COVID-19 cases and exceeding requests for either RT-PCR or antigen tests has abruptly forced a majority of private laboratories to stop collecting swab samples even from testing centres for at least two days.
As per a government bulletin on Tuesday evening, in the last 24 hours, Delhi conducted 86,526 tests. Despite having sufficient infrastructure and equipped with machines and testing kits, many labs are closing themselves for three to four days citing overburden and shortage in manpower.

Thakurnagar (West Bengal), April 16 (ANI): As the West Bengal Assembly elections is on its fifth phase, the crucial Matua community's (or Namasudras) votes that forms a major chunk of votes in the upcoming phases happens to be instrumental in deciding who comes into power in the state.
In areas that have a predominant presence of this community, political parties are wooing Matuas with varied promises.
On one hand, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is pitching implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the first cabinet meeting once it forms government in the state whereas the Left Front that has the fragrance of its lost glory lingering in these areas speaks of providing employment and education. Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 16 (ANI): The fifth phase of West Bengal assembly elections on Saturday will be held with the deployment of 1,071 companies of central forces for ensuring a peaceful election.
In addition to this, 15,790 state police officials will also be on duty on Saturday for the fifth phase polls.
This phase has 45 assembly constituencies in six districts - Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, and Purba Bardhaman.
According to West Bengal CEO, Purba Bardhaman will see the deployment of 155 companies, North 24 Parganas 283 companies, Darjeeling 121 companies, Nadia 151 companies, Kalimpong 21 companies and 122 companies will be deployed in Jalpaiguri.

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 12 (ANI): The Election Commission on Monday banned West BengalChief MinisterMamata Banerjee from campaigning for 24 hours in the ongoing assembly elections over her appeal for votes along communal lines.
The commission further condemned such statements as "portent with serious law and order problem" across the state.
The notice came along with a stern warning and advised Mamata to desist from using such statements while addressing the public during the elections.
The EC had earlier sent Mamata notices twice dated April 7 and April 8, citing violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 5 (ANI): As the third phase of the high-stakes West BengalAssembly elections is set to commence on Tuesday, a total of 832 companies of central security forces have been deployed in the constituencies to ensure a peaceful election.
Out of these, 214 companies of Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will be present in the third phase.
