Two “Corona Devi” idols have been set up in the southern city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu state, badly hit in an outbreak that has killed 100,000 people nationwide in the past four weeks. India on Thursday posted 211,298 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, while deaths from COVID-19 rose by 3,847. The South Asian country’s overall caseload is now at 27.37 million, while total fatalities are at 315,235, according to health ministry data. ....

The Kamatchipuri Adhinam temple is closed to worshippers because of the city s high infection rates but priests are paying tribute in front of the deities, one made of sandalwood and the other from stone. They leave food and other offerings, chant prayers urging an end to the pandemic and bathe the idols in turmeric water and milk. ....
COIMBATORE: A temple to ‘Goddess Corona Devi’ has come up on the outskirts of Coimbatore, which already has a Plague Mariamman temple that came up when the scourge struck a century ago. The Kamatchipuri Adhinam consecrated the one-anda-half-foot-tall, black stone idol on its premises near Irugur on Tuesday and the pujas continued on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the adhinam said special pujas would continue for up to 48 days but would not be open to members of the public in view of pandemic protocols. In a video released by the adhinam, Sri Sivalingeswara Swamigal said, “following the footsteps of our ancestors, we have installed an idol for ‘Corona Devi’ because we believe God will help the hapless. We will be conducting special prayers for 48 days and only adhinam staff will be allowed to participate in the prayers. ....

While speaking to ANI on Friday morning, the manager and priest of the temple, Anand Bharathi said, With a rise in Covid-19 cases in Coimbatore, all the preists of the temple decided to consecrate Corona Devi idol to protect people from Covid-19 pandemic.
We are continuously praying to Corona Devi to show mercy on us and help us get rid of this virus. Many of us chant, show mercy Corona Devi , Make Corona Devi vanish from Earth etc. Also, we will conduct a special two-day pooja hoping that our Devi shows mercy at all of us , said the manager. ....
