The information technology and biotechnology department has written to the home department to depute an ADGP-rank officer to head the unit.
Karnataka IT and BT minister Priyank Kharge said the move showed the state government was serious about "tackling misinformation, disinformation, malinformation and fake news."
The different stakeholders include the public, fact-checking agencies, the state and central governments and social media platforms.
Experts are of the view that Karnataka's decision to implement a cybersecurity function without directions from the central government appears to be ultra vires and void.
On the suggestion that fact-checking be left to independent bodies, Priyank Kharge says the government is ‘establishing independent bodies that will be enlisted to assist’ it in combating misinformation.
