The online lecture was organised by the varsity’s Department of Geography and Disaster Management (DGDM) in memory of late Professor Husain, who headed the Department (then Department of Geography and Regional Management) from 1981 to 1987.
Asserting that Professor Husain, apart from being an erudite scholar, was a great human being, Prof Talat said memorial lectures are a fitting tribute to eminent personalities who have left an indelible mark with their contributions.
“Such lecturers help young students to draw inspiration from great people who have immensely contributed to the institutions they served by dint of their determination,” he said. ....

KU To Launch New Administration Management System Soon
The AMS, designed and developed by the varsity’s Directorate of Information Technology and Support System, aims to consolidate data pertaining to employees, departments and positions while facilitating online submission of proposals and approvals thereof.
The AMS, Prof Talat said, was the need of the hour to further boost the efficiency of the university system.
“The more we facilitate the introduction of technology into our systems of governance and functioning, the better the results and outcome would be,” he said, asserting that the AMS modules include HR Management, Leave, Budget, Salary, Attendance and e-Notes. ....

Wooden constructions suit Kashmir in view of seismicity: VC KU


 
Srinagar: Internationally-acclaimed earth scientist and Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir Prof Talat Ahmad on Saturday urged inhabitants and policy-planners of the Himalayan region, including Kashmir, to do away with constructing heavy concrete houses and buildings to minimise casualties during earthquakes.
Addressing as lead speaker a technical session of the ongoing two-week refresher course in science, organised by Kashmir University’s UGC-HRDC, Prof Talat said that wooden houses are best suited for a place like Kashmir since the Himalayan region falls in a high seismic zone.
He said houses and buildings in Japan, which experiences high magnitude earthquakes, are largely wooden which gives these structures flexibility to withstand ground-shaking which concrete buildings of heavy marbles and limestone cannot do. ....

SRINAGAR: Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir Prof Talat Ahmad said on Saturday that academics and researchers need to keep themselves updated with the latest developments in their areas of specialisation to stay relevant in the new and emerging multi-disciplinary approach to education and research.

Addressing as chief guest the inaugural session of a two-week refresher course in science, organised by the varsity’s UGC-HRDC, Prof Talat said: “The overall scenario vis-à-vis academics and research is changing. Everything is merging. It’s the interdisciplinary and the multi-disciplinary approach at work now. So as teachers we may be specialised in one subject but we have to know many things from other areas as well,” he said, underscoring that while refresher courses are a requirement for teachers in their promotions, these are extremely significant to help them gain updated knowledge an ....
