The impossible became possible after a medical team performed a double neural bypass.
Bioelectronic researchers at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research have restored sensations to man living with quadriplegia by implanting microchips into the brain and re-linking it to his body and spinal cord with AI algorithms.
The implant sends signals to a computer, which interprets the patient's intentions and turn them into action.
Implanted in his brain, the five microchips 'supercharge' the patient's spinal cord and are leading to lasting improvements even when the system is turned off, researchers said.
The patient, who has been quadriplegic since an accident, was able to move his hands through his thoughts.
