Kerala elections: CPM's bold assembly poll ticket gamble- The New Indian Express

Kerala elections: CPM’s bold assembly poll ticket gamble
Despite being aware of the risks involved, the party valiantly chose to stick to its radical decision of not fielding those who have contested the last two Assembly polls.

The ruling CPM trod a brave path when it announced its list of candidates for the Kerala Assembly elections, dropping 33 sitting MLAs, including some powerful ministers and mass leaders. Its gamble of deploying young and new faces paid off in the recent local body elections, but there’s no guarantee that the same strategy can yield results in a state polls where factors at work are vastly different.

KOTTAYAM: Amid protests among the CPM cadre against giving the Kuttiyadi seat to the Kerala Congress (M), controversies over the new ally’s candidate in Piravom has put the LDF in a fix. On Wednesday evening, the KC (M) announced Dr Sindhumol Jacob, vice president of Uzhavoor block panchayat, as its candidate for Piravom. But her selection comes even as she is holding a CPM membership at the Uzhavoor North branch. The development led to an allegation that Sindhumol’s candidature was decided as per an understanding between the CPM and the KC (M).

In protests & poster war, a 2011 rewind for CPM- The New Indian Express

Express News Service
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The poster war and the open resentment over party candidates have been rocking the CPM in the past few days. For the CPM, the open protests bring back memories of 2006, when party members took to the streets for veteran V S Achuthanandan. However, Left allies feel 2011 would be a far better pointer to remind the CPM of what could be in store.
Though the CPI and other allies have remained silent, they feel that the CPM would do well to remember the 2011 example, when the Achuthanandan-led Left government fell short of only a couple of seats to ensure continuity in office. “Had we fielded some capable hands in 2011, the Left would have undoubtedly come back to power. Poor candidate selection could prove to be a major setback for the Left,” said a senior Left leader.

KANNUR: Reacting sharply to the Union home minister’s tirade against him in Thiruvanantha-puram, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said Amit Shah is communalism personified. Kick-starting ‘Padayorukkam’, the LDF election campaign, at Pinarayi here on Monday, the CM said Shah has humiliated the state and the Congress has not spoken anything against it.
“His speech was quite unbecoming of his stature as the Home Minister. Though he has reached a big position, from the speech he had made, it seems that the man has not changed much from the person who had led the genocide in Gujarat in 2002,” he said. On Shah’s questions, the CM said he was not the one who was jailed for kidnapping.

Kerala polls: Anger among CPM cadres over candidate selection, seat sharing

Express News Service
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the CPM enters the campaign mode harbouring hopes of a second straight term in office, anger is boiling over regarding candidate selection and seat sharing.
On a day when the CPM secretariat finalised candidates, the state witnessed open protests in Ponnani and Kuttiyadi in addition to strong resentment within a section of supporters over exclusion of leaders with proven mass appeal.
There have been protests and poster campaigns in Alappuzha against the exclusion of G Sudhakaran and Thomas Isaac. On the other hand, allotting safe seats like Ranni, Kuttiyadi and Changanassery to KC(M) Jose K Mani faction has not gone down well with the cadre.
