Bloody Easter weekend on Eastern Cape roads as 25 confirmed dead

Twenty-five people were killed and many others injured inroad accidents in the EasternCape over the Easter weekend. Dozens of people were arrested in Buffalo City Metro and King Sabata Dalindyebo local municipality for offences ranging from drunk driving and obstruction, to driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, jumping a red traffic light, overloading and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

Bylaw on cultural slaughter sparks row

Buffalo City Metro’s call for city residents planning to host traditional events like imigidi to get permission first has been criticised, with some residents accusing the municipality of meddling in their cultural rights.According to the city’s municipal health services bylaw, those planning to slaughter animals and hosting imigidi — to celebrate the homecoming of initiates from the mountain — need to apply to the municipality for a permit to conduct the ritual and cultural slaughter on their premises if those premises are within the metro.

Fort Hare students still without connectivity

Telecommunications companies MTN SA and Vodacom have reflected on their investments in the Eastern Cape over the 2023/2024 financial year, an accumulated R800m, though an internal study by the University of Fort Hare on its students has revealed that 64.5% are still without proper connectivity. In a media statement, Vodacom said it would invest more than R500m into the province towards new base stations, improving network capacity, LTE upgrades, backup power stability and a 5G rollout.
