The check points are set up 20, 30, 40-miles deep into the united states, giving the illegal immigrants and the drug smugglers plenty of time to hide and get away. this is farmer stewart lowe. we came here to talk to him about the border patrol and the job it is doing. you can actually see the border crossing. it s right in our backyard. reporter: right in your backyard. how do you feel about it being right there and opposed to being right on the border? i think it is wasting federal dollars. this is another example of pedestrian foot traffic circumventing the checkpoint. they get a kilometer or three kilometers north and they round back up towards the interstate and there is pickup points that the guides are familiar with. reporter: so does this concern you when you see this so close to your home? it does. we used to come down, bring the ....

Having men manning the border. this, is i would say, more of a commercial for homeland security. this is another example of pedestrian foot traffic circumventing the checkpoint. they get a kilometer, three kilometers north, and then they round back up towards the intersta interstate. and there s pick-up points that they re that the guides are familiar with. this is where they take cover. the guides lead them here, usually the guides are fed these rotisserie chicken deals. reporter: i see the containers on the ground there. and then you will see some like cans of tuna fish and stuff that, you know, the charges are eating. reporter: all the trash and containers that we re seeing, that s from migrants, yeah, that s migrant trash. reporter: does this concern ....

We can do a lot more what you were alluding to before. what is going on down deep that might be a hint about whether it s going to be a large volume eruption today, tomorrow, the next week, whatever, and another thing is when it comes out to better refine the density of particulates and what you don t want the jet engine to suck in. what s the density and what can you tolerate and not tolerate? is it one particle per cubic ki kilometer? is that too much? what are the thresholds? it s difficult with a cloud. you think about what a cloud looks like. it has a fuzzy edge and it s not easy to see a cloud. it s often hidden by steam and other masking effects. so we re learning but we re getting there but it s going to be a while. it s a pretty new field, about ten years old, probably, 20 years old. how to from space, mostly, understand the dynamics of the atmosphere and where the clouds ....

Long-term regional or even global effects? what s the most important thing to know about an eruption to know whether it could be that severe? those eruptions were quite unusual, they were long-lived, went on for more than a year and erupted voluminous quantities of ash. this is much, much smaller, than those eruptions. several times smaller than the size of those eruptions. the most important parameter is really the duration of the eruption and how much lava and ash are emitted. is there any way to predict what the duration of this eruption will be and i guess more in practical terms when planes might be flying again in europe? well, it s not a certainty, but can you look at the past eruptions of this volcano and that s a good guide to what they re probably going to do in the future. the past few eruptions of this particular volcano have lasted months to little more than a year, but they ve really erupted only a very small amount of material, less than a cubic kilometer. for comp ....

Result erupted less than a cubic kilometer. mount st. helens was a tenth of that size. but they re monitoring it with a va rye at the of instruments. if it were to intensify or grow much larger or give signs it were going to intensify and grow much larger, they should see some signals of that. one last question for you just about your own experience. i know you ve flown in planes around active value cane knows to view ash and gas plumes from volcanos when they re going off. we ve got footage from the eruption in alaska in 2008. how hard is it to monitor a volcano in the air when the ash is so damaging to aircraft? right. well, you have to keep a safe distance and your aerial observations are giving you visual information about what s going on so you can interpret firsthand the process. but it s very important to have instruments on the ground ....
