I want to take you back to a big worry that many people in japan have right now. it s the two nuclear plants and the threat of a possible meltdown. now, earlier this morning i spoke to a nuclear energy expert out of london. he says because of a pressure buildup, officials released gases from the pressure vessel. that s a key part of the plant s safety system where most radioactive material is kept. now, those gases contained hydrogen, which triggered the explosion when it mixed with oxygen. this is the explosion we have been reporting. that s the explosion on your screen there. a big cloud of white smoke going up. the explosion caused actually no damage to the reactor itself. the most important thing right now is getting cooling water into the middle reactor. middle of the reactor. now, the very worst of the radioactive would have died away by now. remember, we re more than two days into this crisis. but the area is still days away from actually being deemed safe. now, official respons ....
Partial or full meltdown. if they re at this point, it s because they have no other choice. we have video we ve seen of people who have been treated for radiation exposure but there s also a lot of concern even far away from that area that the winds and possibly the weather or rains, whatever may come, will carry some of this radioactive material elsewhere. is that concerning to you? well, of course it s a concern. you don t want that to happen. i think you have to put it in some context. if the weather if the wind are wloeing out to sea, this will go out to sea and not be a problem. the farther you live from the plant, the less will be blown toward you. it depend on what the type of release were, that type of radiation, all that matters. radiation is more than radiation. there are big differences. but the bottom line is, they have to vent it. they have no choice. nuclear power plants often do this anyway. they have to do it now because ....
