Israel secretly keeps database on drivers - and fails to delete facial photos

Israel’s transportation continues to hold on to a database containing facial photos, despite promising to have them deleted. During a meeting of the Knesset Science and Technology Committee it was revealed that the ministry of transport was still holding onto the facial database of drivers deemed to be dangerous, in contrast to an order to have them deleted by November 1.
In a testimony to the potential risks of facial databases, the State Comptroller’s report from last May found numerous flaws in the way this database was being managed, including flawed security that left it exposed to possible hacking and the unregulated transferring of data from it to the police. ....

Cities across Israel installed thousands of cameras with no oversight, Knesset report says

The only directives regarding the installation of such CCTV cameras are from the Justice Ministry’s Privacy Protection Authority from 2012, and directives regarding the use of drones as well as an Interior Ministry procedure on cameras in parking structures.
According to the report’s author, Ro’i Goldschmidt, facial recognition cameras are not in use by any of the municipalities that responded to the Knesset research center’s questionnaire.
However, the Israel Airports Authority did not respond to the questionnaire and the Public Security Ministry asked that its replies be kept confidential. ....

Hackers say they sold batch of information stolen from Israeli insurance firm

Shirbit said in response, “This is the psychological warfare we expected and is in regard to the same information that was already disseminated.”
“Shirbit’s defense systems blocked attack attempts and efforts to thwart attacks are ongoing and are coordinated with leading cyber experts and government officials,” the company said.
Black Shadow has leaked thousands of documents from the purloined hoard to the internet as a warning that it would carry out its threats. Many of Shirbit’s clients are from the public sector and images of private documents released included the vehicle registration and credit card details of an employee at the President’s Residence, as well as personal correspondence and a marriage certificate. Earlier leaks had reportedly included the personal details of the president of the Tel Aviv District Court. ....
