Comments AMD may have cancelled the Ryzen 6000 series of processors due to the global chip shortage, but that doesnât mean we wonât get a new generation of chips based on the next generation of AMDâs Zen architecture. A prominent leaker has revealed some early specs for the new architecture, as well as a first look at what the commercial desktop CPUs could look like. The information comes from ExecutableFix, a known leaker in the PC hardware space. The upcoming â Raphaelâ series will supposedly be â the first Zen 4 consumer chipâ and has some pretty interesting specs already⦠First of all, in case youâre not quite sure what it is, Zen 4 is the next generation of architecture that powers AMDâs Ryzen processors. The latest stack, the Ryzen 5000 series, uses the Zen 3 architecture, which is a massive upgrade over Zen 2. AMDâs own projections show Zen 4 to be just as much of a leap (if not more) from Zen 3 as Zen 3 was to Zen 2. So the implications are very exciting to say the least.
AMD’s Zen 4 AM5 socket could adopt a similar pin design to Intel When AMD’s Zen 4 processors arrive sometime next year, they’re expected to use a new AM5 socket, replacing the AM4 socket used on the company’s current best gaming CPU. This means the current best gaming motherboard for AMD chips won’t be compatible. Leaker Execufix, who’s successfuly leaked AMD info before, has outlined some of the rumoured specifications of the AM5 socket, and there’s a surprise. On its previous sockets, AMD has used a Pin Grid Array (PGA) layout, where the pins are on the CPU rather than the motherboard. Intel has stuck with a Land Grid Array (LGA) design in previous generations, and Execufix claims the red team plans to switch to a similar design, with the AM5 socket adopting an LGA 1718 layout, as opposed to the PGA 1331 socket used on AM4. That’s quite close to the LGA 1700 socket planned for Alder Lake.
