A majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians support a reduction in provincial government spending and a plan to tackle provincial debt, according to a poll conducted by Narrative Research for a local business group.
About 77 per cent of respondents — after hearing a question about the province's dire financial straits, including the net debt — said the government should "make changes to program and service delivery to reduce spending."
Eleven per cent said it should increase taxes, and eight per cent said it should continue borrowing.
The poll was sponsored by the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers' Council, a group that has been calling for spending cuts at the provincial government level for years.

The Liberals, Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats revealed a little more about positions on social issues at a Federation of Labour forum Tuesday night, even though the parties have yet to release full platforms 10 days before the Newfoundland and Labrador election.
The forum — the second of three consecutive debates this week — covered a wide range of topics, including strains on the health-care system, the vulnerable, transitioning the economy from oil, the minimum wage, sick leave and privatization.

Talking about bankruptcy? Overdue, says this prof. But as a ploy for Ottawa? Not so much

Talking about bankruptcy? Overdue, says this prof. But as a ploy for Ottawa? Not so much
PC Leader Ches Crosbie raised a procovative issue earlier this week: using Newfoundland and Labrador's weakened financial situation as a potential strength in getting a new deal from the federal government. Political scientist Kelly Blidook says Crosbie is dishing "the same kind of garbage that leaders keep doing in this province."

A Come Home Year and a staycation push: It's the tale of two tourism plans

Liberals plan Come Home Year
Ballot office fuss
Leader schedules for Thursday
The Progressive Conservatives and Liberals laid out duelling visions of a tourism strategy Wednesday, as the parties campaigned against the backdrop of Tuesday's attempted attack on local politicians.
PC Leader Ches Crosbie and Liberal Leader Andrew Furey both made tourism and travel announcements as part of their morning news conferences. The duelling plans, on their surface, shared some similar language.
While the Liberals promised to "capitalize on that expanded global spotlight," the PCs called for a plan that would "capitalize on the natural beauty of our province."
