have done anything else, given that the us said, "look, we are going, "we're not going to support you?" britain didn't really have any other choice, did it? well, we couldn't stay there without the american support and i don't know enough about what internal conversations there have been, but certainly my view has been we should have been — and maybe we were, so i am not criticising anyone — but we should have been arguing very strongly that this was the wrong thing to do. whether you like it or not, it is part of your legacy. what would you say to the soldiers we have heard from this week that have been horrifically injured in afghanistan and the widows of soldiers who have died and they are saying, "well, "there was no point to this, was there?" they went to fight a war that was completely pointless and it is going back to the way it was. 0ur troops were fantastic in afghanistan and a lot of them made the ultimate sacrifice, a lot of them were injured and it is really important that they know this wasn't a hopeless endeavour and it wasn't a bad cause,

mauldin. ♪ all right, i want to go back to another one of our top stories, that is, of course, the fall of afghanistan. for years qatar played the role of middleman between the u.s. and the taliban. it hosted peace talks between the two groups, and it has been home to taliban negotiators and u.s. troops. cnn's sam kiley sat down with qatar's foreign minister to discuss his country's legacy in the taliban takeover. >> reporter: no western ally has as much experience with the taliban leadership than qatar. this tiny gas-rich nation already hosts the vast american air base and command center at al adade, and it's used in operations against the militants. but it's also hosted and mediated the peace deal between the u.s. and taliban under the

coming back to haunt you firsthand as he watches it. but clearly, he then backs away from it. he says it because he knows it's the right thing when you're holding a large superspreader event with maskless crowds in a state that's suffering from covid cases. it's completely reckless and shameless for him to hold that rally. two donald trumps. get a vaccine, but i'm also going to gather you, put your lives at risk, send you back into the communities and create further hardship for the healthcare and front line workers there who are already facing this firsthand once again in these ers and hospitals. >> yeah. i got to tell you, you're 100% right, it is definitely donald trump's legacy, but also the legacy of those front line workers of you and me. those of us who try to go about our daily lives and would love to take off our masks and would love to feel we could go around

without the burden of constantly being reminded about covid. that is the legacy this country is having to bear until we all just pull together and say let's do this and do it together. it seems we're too divided. >> we are. and unfortunately we have still governors, right, at the forefront, who are continuing to create divisions and burdens with their antimask rhetoric and everything they're doing to push these executive orders. they're making it so much harder and you're seeing the arguments happen at schools. i mean, who are we as a country when we can't protect our children? and you create harder measures? parents are already overtaxed. they've just spent a year, you know, over a year, home schooling their children and going through this and now you're creating things that are even harder. i just heard from someone in texas who said i had to pull my child out of school and governor

The Sunday Show With Jonathan Capehart-20210822-14:59:00

. welcome back to the sunday show. i'm jonathan capehart. we're keeping an eye on tropical storm henri due to make landfall in the knot east in the coming hours. residents are bracing for possible power outages and flooding. joining me is meteorologist bill. what's the latest? >> we're going to see landfall in this hour. i think by noon this thing will be on shore. it crossed over the top of black island and now it's heading for rhode island right now the connecticut/rhode island border. it's only a tropical storm and doesn't have intense winds. we don't need to focus too much on that. there's not major destruction. maybe some roof damage. the biggest issue will be the rainfall. that will be the legacy of this storm. if we get a lot of significant damage, it will be from the heavy rain.

they built schools and health clinics, they worked with journalists like me. those are the people you see desperately trying to get inside the kabul airport now, again, 300,000. >> so something that struck me as i was reading up for our interview was that 70% of afghanis are young and that the only life that they know are the ones where the american forces came in and tried to create a modern afghan. does this give you hope that they don't have this legacy of taliban rule, that they have an understanding of modernization where they want to continue thriving, where women can be shopkeepers? give me some insight to that. >> that number is correct. and the young population is large. afghanistan is a deeply divided country. so, young people who grew up in cities are better educated. they want to be like dubai, turkey, they want to have a modern country. they love mobile phones, they

for refugee services of texas. good to have you on. i think, for a lot of people used to, you know, anti-immigrant, anti-refugee rhetoric in the u.s., what -- what texas and many other places it must be said are doing is something of a bright spot. what -- what made the state make this offer? >> well, texas has actually been quite a welcoming place we have found for refugees and other categories of displaced persons. refugee services of texas is the largest resettlement agency in the state. we have six sites all over texas. and we serve a really wide variety of displaced persons. we have lots of volunteers. we have lots of generous donors and -- um -- thank goodness because we need them right now. >> yeah, i was going to ask you and, in fact, it was interesting. i was reading the st. louis mayor she tweeted something. i just want to read it for people. she said st. louis has a long history of welcoming refugees and immigrants. today, we build on that legacy
