Dawn Johnson, superintendent at Nickerson-South Hutchinson Unified School District 309, interviewed with the board Thursday evening. A Kansas native, Johnson attended Wichita State University and taught secondary-level English in various state districts. She later became a principal of Little River High School and later an assistant superintendent in that district. She later transferred to USD 309 as an assistant superintendent before receiving a Wichita State doctorate and becoming superintendent, a position she has served in for the last five years. In addition to her superintendent duties, Johnson said she has taught an online higher education course for students aspiring to become principals, and through teaching that course, Johnson said she has been able to stay at the forefront of school management strategies.
Shawnee Height's next superintendent could be a familiar face to the school district. Silver Lake Unified School District 372 superintendent Tim Hallacy on Monday was the third out of four candidates the Shawnee Heights Board of Education interviewed to be the district's next superintendent. A Shawnee County educator for nearly 30 years, Hallacy first started his career as a teacher at Silver Lake before transitioning to administration in 1999 as an assistant principal and athletics director at Seaman USD 345's since-closed Northern Hills Junior High School. He was hired as the Shawnee Heights Middle School principal in 2006 before returning to Silver Lake in 2012, where he has been superintendent since.
