“BURNED,” a yearlong investigation from the California Newsroom, reveals how the U.S. Forest Service is struggling to complete the work it knows it must do to keep Californians safe from wildfires. For decades, the agency has developed projects to thin and manage overgrown forests in an effort to reduce wildfire intensity. But those plans routinely stall out, and sometimes are abandoned completely.

"In our opinion, they did nothing to put this fire out," Grizzly Flats, California, resident Candance Tyler told Bill Whitaker about the U.S. Forest Service response.

Grizzly Flats, California, was destroyed by fire in less than 15 minutes last year. Most residents there blame the U.S. Forest Service.

Grizzly Flat residents Kathy Gallagher and Paul Johnson were riding their quads in a south county area razed by the Caldor Fire last week when they spotted what looked like a smoldering campfire.

Crews battling the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County on Thursday were bracing for new spot fires that could fuel fire growth as thousands of people remained under evacuation orders after the blaze leveled much of Grizzly Flats this week.
