A piece of Listowel s history is gone as crews finish demolition of the Listowel Memorial Arena.
The building had been sitting empty for the past two years following the construction of the community’s new arena.
The Listowel Memorial Arena has a dark history, after seven peewee-aged hockey players and their coach were killed inside the facility after the roof collapsed on them on February 28, 1959.
A memorial will be a part of the future plans for the space, which is also expected to include parking and a recreational area.
Meanwhile, work to demolish a dam in Huron County is expected to begin later this year. The Gorrie Dam will soon be coming down. ....

Public health officials reported 12 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Huron and Perth counties Wednesday, the same day Health Canada approved a second vaccine expected to be rolled out to front-line health-care workers and other high-priority candidates by the end of the month.
Seven of the region’s new cases were reported in North Perth, where COVID-19 rates have been on the rise. Of the 51 active cases in Huron and Perth counties on Wednesday, 18 were in North Perth, nine were in Perth East and five were in Stratford.

Officials say a COVID-19 outbreak has been declared on the second floor medicine unit of the Listowel Memorial Hospital.
The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance says currently there are three patients and seven staff who have been identified as part of the outbreak.
They say the virus remains heavily present throughout the municipality and it is crucial that everyone in North Perth continue to follow public health practices to reduce community transmission.
The emergency department visits, ambulatory care services, operating room procedures, obstetrics, diagnostic imaging and specialist visits continue to take place. ....

A second hospital outbreak has been declared in Perth County, the latest on the second floor medicine unit of Listowel Memorial Hospital.
According to the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance, three patients and seven staff members have so far tested positive for COVID-19.

Karl Ellis, the hospital group’s chief executive, said those tests were done on the weekend and “the bulk” came back Wednesday when the outbreak was officially declared.
All staff and physicians that have worked in Listowel Memorial Hospital since Dec. 11 will now be tested for COVID-19 and the hospital is working closely with Huron Perth public health to respond to the outbreak. ....
