Police identify homicide victim found on snowmobile trail near Richmond


 
OTTAWA
Ottawa Police say the death of a man on a snowmobile trail near Richmond is being treated as a homicide.
A passerby found the man s body on a trail off of Dobson Lane, near McBean Street, just before 9 a.m. Sunday.
The victim has been identified as Leo Santostefano, 40, of Ottawa.
The Ottawa Police Service Homicide Unit has not released the cause of death.
Investigators want to speak with anyone who was in the area of McBean Street between 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday and noticed anything suspicious. You can contact the Homicide Unit at 612-236-1222, ext. 5493. ....

Second man charged in Highway 17 debris investigation


 
OTTAWA
Ontario Provincial Police say a second man has been charged in connection with their investigation into debris found strewn along Hwy. 17 in the Ottawa Valley.
The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP and Renfrew County OPP have been investigating a number of incidents involving debris being placed on the highway between Pembroke and Renfrew this winter, including boulders, vehicle rims and water tanks.
A second arrest was announced Monday. OPP said Braydon Pierce, 21, of Golden Lake, has been charged with three counts of mischief endangering life and one count of mischief under $5000.
He was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on March 30 in Pembroke. ....

In a conversation to mark International Women s Day, Dr. Vera Etches, who is among those leading Ottawa s fight against COVID-19, discussed what inspired her to pursue work in public health, her role models, and why she s hopeful for the future.  
I chose public health because it is about keeping people healthy, Etches said to Mayor Jim Watson as part of the mayor s annual International Women s Day breakfast which was virtual this year because of the pandemic.
It was really some time actually with public health nurses in Malawi, in Africa, that reinforced for me this was the kind of work that I wanted to do, that the public health nurses were tackling things like HIV/AIDS and they were inspiring in how they were working with the community, they knew the community, I felt that was the kind of workforce I wanted to be part of.   ....
