COVINGTON, Ga. — New positions to pick up roadside trash, fight fires and inspect existing and ongoing construction are among finance officials’ initial recommendations for commissioners to include in the 2022 county budget.
The Newton County Board of Commissioners began the process of approving the budget last week with public presentations from department heads and elected officials.

Mass vaccine site to open in Newton next week


COVINGTON — The Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale County Health Departments will open a mass vaccination site at Georgia Piedmont Technical College's Newton Campus Monday, April 19. The site will be open Monday through Wednesday each week by appointment only.
According to a release from Newton County, vaccinations will be administered in Building D - 8100 in Newton County, located at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, Newton Campus in Building D - 8100 Bob Williams Parkway, Covington. Dependent on vaccine availability, Pfizer or Moderna vaccines will be administered at the location. Second-dose appointments will be made during the first visit.
Those who would like to make a vaccination appointment can schedule online at www.gnrhealth.com/covid-vaccine-scheduling or by calling the Georgia Department of Public Health vaccine scheduling resource line: 1-888-457-0186. Appointments can be made beginning at noon on Thursday, April 15.

COVINGTON, Ga. — The Newton County government's attorney said Tuesday the FBI indicated it found no criminal wrongdoing during a probe of allegations a county commissioner illegally benefited from leading a nonprofit agency that operated a Covington community center.
The allegations were included in a 2016 audit that stated District 4 Commissioner J.C. Henderson benefited financially from transactions totaling more than $42,000 made on behalf of the county.

COVINGTON, Ga. — Newton County commissioners have approved agreements designed to help finalize a deal for construction of a data center on the last sites available within Stanton Springs industrial park.
Commissioners on Tuesday, March 2, voted for agreements with the data center developer — identified as Baymare LLC — as well as three neighboring counties and a joint development authority — for the project planned for a site in the park near Social Circle.

COVINGTON, Ga. — A county commissioner said some residents of her district told her they did not want SPLOST money used for a facility in which they would have no say over the occupant’s programming.
District 3 Commissioner Alana Sanders said in an email that “multiple” homeowners association presidents and residents told her they opposed using sales tax money reserved for a west Newton “youth outreach project” if it included a private organization.

COVINGTON, Ga. — Pushback from two separate groups last week likely helped end planned sales tax funding of a county commissioner's proposed west Newton community center.
Supporters of the Newton County Boys & Girls Club and residents of the area near the community center site spoke against District 3 Commissioner Alana Sanders' plan for funding the project in Fairview Community Park during the Feb. 16 Newton County Board of Commissioners meeting.
