"Personal Agency within Borderline Personality Disorder" by Talia Hashworth

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health disorder characterised by impairments in affect, behaviour, identity, and interpersonal relationships. Personal agency, operationalised by locus of control, refers to the extent that individuals feel that they have control over their outcomes. Low personal agency is understood as the tendency for individuals to perceive outcomes as a result of external factors, such as luck, chance, or fate. High personal agency is the extent that individuals perceive outcomes as dependent on their own personal characteristics, such as effort or ability. Low personal agency has been shown to be associated with greater BPD symptoms; however, no known studies have assessed these constructs together over time. Adult attachment styles consist of secure, preoccupied, fearful, and dismissive, and previous research has shown a relationship between BPD symptoms and insecure attachment. "Personal agency and borderline personality disorder: a longitudinal st" by Talia Hashworth, Samantha Reis et al.

Background: Low personal agency is the concept of attributing successes and failures to external factors rather than personal characteristics. Previous research supported links between low personal agency and symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The present research followed patients in an outpatient dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) group from intake to 12 months follow up to examine the impact of personal agency on outcome. Methods: Patients (N = 57, age 18–72, 91.5% female) were assessed at intake, after three months of DBT treatment, and 12 months follow up on measures of symptoms and personal agency. Three separate measures were used to assess treatment outcomes: the BPD Checklist, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), and the Mental Health Inventory (MHI-5). Results: Mixed model analyses found BPD symptoms significantly reduced as a result of DBT treatment and were maintained at follow-up. However, 47% of participants continued to meet BPD criteria 12 m ....

"Why some siblings thrive whereas others struggle: A within-family stud" by Marie Louise J. Kullberg, Charlotte C. van Schie et al.

Abstract
Background: Brothers and sisters growing up together share a large proportion of their genes and rearing environment. However, some siblings thrive whereas others struggle. This study investigated family-wide childhood bonding experiences with mother and father, in addition to individual-specific recollections, in relation to current depressive and anxiety symptom levels in adulthood. We examined whether extraversion and internal locus of control (iLoC) had a protective effect in this. Methods: The sample consisted of 256 families with at least one lifetime depressed or anxious person (N = 596; ages 20–78). Multilevel modeling with cross-level interactions was used. Results: Adult siblings showed moderate to high agreement in their childhood parental bonding (PB) recollections. Over-and-above the association between individual-specific recollections of PB and adult internalizing symptoms, family-wide poor PB was additionally linked to elevated symptom levels. Within ....
