MACON, Ga. Macon-Bibb County Fire Department investigators are looking for information after a house fire Tuesday.
According to Capt. Roderick Colvard, crews were called to a home on Green Street in Payne City around 3:30 p.m.
He says no one was at home at the time of the fire, so there were no injuries, but the home is a total loss.
Fire investigator Lt. Ben Gleaton says the house fire was ‘definitely an arson.’ He told 13WMAZ they’ve responded to fires at this home three times in the last year.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) Mayor Lester Miller announced a new initiative for tackling blight in the community.
“We must do this one house at a time, and one street at a time. We can do this, and we will do this together,” Miller stated.
Under a local nuisance ordinance, Mayor Miller says the county can remove houses too damaged to live in. The mayor says he partnered with code enforcement and Macon-Bibb County Fire Department to identify burned properties.
The fire department reported 849 structure fires over the past 5 years. Code enforcement chose 150 of those properties to assess and found 64 are unfit to live in.

MACON, Ga. Marvin Riggins has spoken to the Macon Kiwanis Club for years, but Tuesday marked the first time he did so in civilian clothes.
The former Macon-Bibb County fire chief spent the fifth day of his retirement serving as guest speaker for the club that designated him as their first honorary member.
Club president Mickey Pope said the 41-year veteran of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department personifies the six objectives of Kiwanis – placing higher value on humanity and spirituality over material things, daily encouraging the Golden Rule, promoting higher standards, developing intelligent and serviceable citizenship, forming enduring relationships to build better communities and maintaining high ideals that increase righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.
