MYSURU: “My son-in-law Narayan was harassed for over five months after he was forced to clean manholes. He was asked to do so even when he was down with fever,” said Mahadevi, his mother-in-law.
Narayan, 33, a pourakarmika working in Maddur Town Municipal Council, ended his life after penning a note, alleging harassment by two officials as the reason for his extreme step. It is alleged that Narayan, along with several other pourakarmikas, was made to clean manholes with bare hands.

A 34-year-old civic worker who worked for the Maddur Town Municipal Corporation ended his life Tuesday, after he was forced to clean a manwhole and was allegedly harassed by officials .
The victim has been identified as Narayana who was found hanging on Tuesday at around 8:30 in the morning. Reportedly, he was forced to clean a manhole by the municipality officials who later threatened him to state that he entered the manhole voluntarily without any safety equipment.

AAA Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission chairman M. Shivanna will visit Maddur on Thursday following the reported suicide of a pourakarmika in the town.
Mr. Shivanna will visit the house of Narayana, the 37-year-old pourakarmika who died on Tuesday, to offer condolences to the bereaved family. A meeting will be held in Maddur Town Municipal Council to take action against the persons responsible for pourakarmika’s death and for the payment of compensation to the family.
The deceased pourakarmika had allegedly ended his life three months after he was forced to enter a manhole and clear it without any safety gear. The incident was reported in the media and an inquiry was ordered against his senior officials. Before his death, Narayana had alleged that his senior officials were harassing him to state that he had voluntarily cleaned the manhole without any safety gear.
