He s 100 years old. just saying. those are your fast five headlines. the icelandic volcano is spewing more and more ash. scientists say the volcanic activity has increased as the glacier ice continues to collide with magma. nbc s chris jansing has the very latest from iceland. reporter: good morning, alex. the weather this morning has already changed the scene here dramatically. we saw rain, hail, the cloud cover is down so we can t see that billowing plume of volcanic ash we did yesterday. we were able, however, to go up 5,000 feet in a helicopter bringing an expert with us and what we wanted to do was look inside that crater and get her assessment of exactly how long this rumbling might continue, if these eruptions continue, that means the air disruptions continue as well. her best educated guess, it could be another week or two that we see these kinds of eruptions. so a lot of what happens and the impact it has depends on the weather and these changing winds. ....

Car crater. lightning bolts in the smoke that towered hundreds of feet high. looking at this volcano this close is up both awe inspiring and frightening it s been quiet since the 1820s. this volcano has not erupted since 1823. it s been doing so for about two years. hard to imagine the economic catastrophe that s lasted that long now. reporter: this part of the mountain range is where the eruption began last month. now it s mostly quiet with just pockets of smoke. but here the eruptions are huge, dramatic, and show no signs of weakening. there is another nearby volcano called katla which hasn t erupted in almost 90 years and historically erupts around every 50 years. it s feared it could be far more devastating than this one. magma might find its way from this volcano into katla. what happens then i don t know. reporter: so is it possible the magma from this volcano might cause katla to erupt? yes. reporter: we found it hard to fly right next to this display ....

Day with yesterday were talking about and focusing on. it s eight miles away and historically when this volcano goes it tends to follow, as well. it is the largest volcano on this island and when i asked the volcanologist exactly what might happen in terms of travel disruptions he basically said you don t want to know. so, they re really keeping a very close eye on the seismic activity underneath to see how that magma is moving. a lot of different ways that it could be triggered, but that would be one that would, as they say, would really be thealex. all right, as if this wasn t big enough. thanks very much. boiling down the accusations against goldman sachs. why isn t the government going after goldman and not other firms? [ male announcer ] thank you, heat oven. ....

Coast guard, they won t be able to do the flyover and see what they had hoped to see. what they were looking for was just how much of that ice cap, how much of that glacier, had melted. because when that water mixes with the magma, which is of course lava that s still inside the crater, it causes this ash to spew. so the more there is obviously, the longer the eruption, the longer the plane problems will continue. right now, as you know, most of the flights have been canceled over the next couple of days. some of the volcanologists at the university of iceland say it can go on far beyond that, perhaps as long as ten days. but this is obviously a very changeable situation that they re going to continue to try to assess. but as far as today, and getting up in that plane, they aren t going to be able to do it. we re going to try to get in the air and also get a helicopter up and at least get a bird s-eye view of the density of that plume. if we re able to actually fly ....

Conclusion is. obviously, fine ash like this may not even leave a record, but still could be disruptive. how about how long it can last in the air this kind of fine ash? if it s really fine like this, it could stay up there quite a while, but you just wait for the wind currents, the atmoat m atmospheric currents to carry it away. wind shifts could make it better quickly. what about the fact that this is the second eruption for this particular volcano in less than a month. is there anything triggering these ers? no, the eruption shifted from the flank of the volcano up to the summit and that just seems to be where it s going to stay. that s a result of the magma rising closer to the surface. and, again, we just have to keep an eye on it and see what it doesp. . bill, with regard to health problems, how concerned are you about that? what kind of problems could people face? well, the ash could pose ....
