Green hydrogen, powered by renewables, is key for a carbon-neutral future, with partnerships driving its grid integration and energy security.
26 April 2021 23:23 GMT Updated 26 April 2021 23:23 GMT The global pace of the renewables build-out needs to increase by a factor of between five and seven by 2030 and by a factor of ten by the mid-2030s if the world is to reach net zero emissions by mid-century, says a new study by influential climate business think-tank Energy Transitions Commission* (ETC). Power sectors in developed nations should reach near-total decarbonisation by the mid-2030s, with the use of coal eliminated “almost immediately” and clear plans to phase out unabated natural gas, according to the ETC report, ...
“[This is] without a carbon price and obviously, with a carbon price, even faster. But we expect that by 2030, green hydrogen can cost below $2 per kilogram in most geographies and even lower in favorable geographies with very cheap renewables.” In these favourable locations, such as Australia, the cost of green H 2 is expected to fall to $1 per kg by 2030, according to the ETC report, Making the Hydrogen Economy Possible: Accelerating Clean Hydrogen in an Electrified Economy. The cost of producing grey hydrogen — made from unabated natural gas or coal, and pumping 830 million tonnes o...
