Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that New Delhi and Male have had historical ties and India has a development cooperation program with Maldives.
The pro-China Maldivian president's statement came at a celebratory event on Monday, a day after the People's National Congress (PNC), led by him, won 68 out of 93 seats in Sunday's polls
The parliamentary majority for the PNC would give Muizzu the legislative backing to shape the foreign policy of the strategically placed archipelagic state in the Indian Ocean geographically located close to India’s southern coast.
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) has emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections held Sunday (Apr 21). As per local media, the ruling PNC has won at least 66 out of 93 seats, crossing the majority mark of 47. However, full results are expected to be declared by Monday morning (Apr 22).
"The ruling PPM/PNC coalition also won the majority of seats in capital Male' city in today's [Sunday] parliamentary election," reported ‘Edition’ news agency.
