Johannesburg - A magistrate described the man who set his girlfriend on fire, killing her as a cold-blooded killer who contributed to the ever-rising rate of gender-based- violence (GBV).
Magistrate Hambokazi Thwele said so on Thursday at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court while handing a 20-year sentence to Mpho Thobane for killing View Dalingozi in October 2018.

Johannesburg - The man who doused his girlfriend with petrol and set her on fire was set to be sentenced on Thursday after he was convicted last month.
On October 26 in 2018, the then 27-year-old Mpho Thobane doused 32-year-old Viwe Dalingozi with petrol as she slept then set her on fire at their flat in the Joburg CBD . He then fled to Limpopo.
Dalingozi, who was from Engcobo in the Eastern Cape, diedmafter two days of excruciating pain.
Johannesburg Police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said Thobane had arrived home that evening to find Dalingozi sitting with her with friends on another floor. Thobane, he said, was unemployed and Dalingoi was the breadwinner.

Mpho Thobane, the man convicted for burning his girlfriend Viwe Dalingozi to death has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
Sentencing proceedings got underway in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 25 February 2021. This is a month after he was convicted for Dalingozi’s thoughtless killing in October 2018.
Thobane, then 27 years old, poured petrol on the 32 year-old woman, while she was asleep in their flat in the Johannesburg CBD, before setting her on fire. He fled for Limpopo and was arrested by police just days later. Dalingozi suffered till her last breath and died two days after the gruesome attack.
