Guwahati: The debt-ridden and now-defunct Nagaon and Cachar paper mills of the government-owned Hindustan Paper Mill Corporation Limited (HPCL) may now soon find itself going under the hammer with the issuance of an e-auction notice the content of which was put in a national newspaper dated June 1.
The reserve price as per the auction notice was put at Rs 1,139 crore.

Guwahati: Members of an umbrella body of workers’ unions in Assam have pinned their hopes on state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma becoming the next chief minister, instead of Sarbananda Sonowal’s return to the post. The reasons range from unkept promises to basic survival.
The Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions (JACRU), the union body of the now-defunct Nagaon and Cachar paper mills, feels that Sonowal has betrayed them after promising that two mills will be reopened.

SILCHAR: The Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions (JACRU) of the Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, on Monday said CM Sarbananda Sonowal’s carelessness on the mills resulted in the deaths of 85 employees of the industries in the past five years and therefore does not deserve to be the chief minister of Assam again. The committee suggested Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP’s chief strategist in the northeast, be made the next chief minister.
In a statement on Monday, JACRU president Manabendra Chakraborty said the Sarbananda Sonowal government, by its apathetic and inefficient attitude, “has killed 85 employees of the paper mills in the last five years”. “The government made countless promises about the mills’ revival and payment of dues, but all those were bogus. Sonowal betrayed the people of Assam and does not deserve to be the chief minister again. Himanta Biswa Sarma should be given a chance and be made the next chief minister,” he said.

SILCHAR: Employees of the two defunct paper mills in Assam expressed hope that the next state government will consider the issue of revival of the mills on a priority basis.
The Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions (JACRU) of Cachar and Nagaon Paper Mills made an appeal for revival of the mills saying that the next government in the state should take necessary steps to restart the industries and remit all the dues of their employees.
JACRU president Manabendra Chakraborty on Saturday said that both the BJP-led alliance and the Congress’ mahajot had promised during their campaigning that the paper mills would be revived if they win the assembly election and form the next government.
