*Nkhata Bay Central Constituency fell vacant after court nullification of 2019 results
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is set to hold by-elections for Nkhata Bay Constituency and two wards, Chikwembere in Blantyre North and Lalanje in Nsanje Lalanje constituencies.
The post for Nkhata Bay Central Constituency, that was declared from the 2019 tripartite elections results as having been won Simon Vuwa Kaunda, fell vacant after court nullification while the Councillors for the two wards died.

Constituencies that have been nullified by the courts since 2019 include Mangochi West; Mangochi North East; Phalombe North; Chikwawa East; Nsanje North and Nsanje Central.

On Tuesday, December 15, 2020, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) held three parliamentary by-elections: one in Phalombe North Constituency in Phalombe district, another one in Mangochi West Constituency in Mangochi district and another one in Mangochi North East Constituency in the same district.

In Mangochi West Constituency an independent candidate Reuben Kanyama won with 5,648 seconded by another independent candidate, Simeon Harrison who got 5,636 votes. In Phalombe it is also another independent, Mabvuto Bokosi, who has won with 8,256 votes followed by Justin Samuel Mokowa of UTM with 3,804.

DEC 16 BY-ELECTIONS: DPP, UDF Triumph, Humiliate Tonse Alliance In Three Constituencies

DPP backed candidate for Phalombe North constituency Mavuto Bokosi has triumphed in the by-elections held yesterday after flooring four other candidates with 8245 votes.
Bokosi was heavily campaigned by DPP Vice President for the Southern Region Honourable Kondwani Nankhumwa and regional governor Charles Mchacha.
In Mangochi North East Constituency, Idi Kalosi of United Democratic Front ( UDF) has carried the day with 9,898 votes against Martin Sekati Nyengo (independent), who got 9,093 votes while Duncan Cassim, an independent candidate came third with 185 votes.
In Mangochi West, independent candidate, Reuben Kanyama, who was backed by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) got 5, 648 votes, flooring Semion Harrison, independent, but was being backed by Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who got 5,635 followed by Geoffrey Chiwondo, who got 1,952 votes,  Stanley Jubeki Phiri amassed 166 votes and last was Gomani Banda, who got 53 votes.

Results for Mangochi North East Constituency has seen Idi Kalosi of United Democratic Front ( UDF)  being elected as member of parliament.

Kachale Impressed With Voting Process, Voter Turn Out in Mangochi By-Elections

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Chifundo Kachale this morning took time to visit some of polling centres in Mangochi West to appreciate how the voting process is progressing.
Speaking after he visited Malembo, Chantulo, Thema and Cholumba polling centres, Kachale   expressed satisfaction with the voting process so far, saying he is impressed with the turn out voters.
At least, 27,190 voters are expected to cast their vote in Mangochi West.
Six candidates, namely, Semion Harrison (independent), Geoffrey Chiwondo (DPP), Stanley Phiri (UTM), Gomani Banda (independent), Reuben Kanyama (independent) and Joyce Chikumba (independent) are competing in the constituency after High Court nullified the 2019 election results due to a plethora of irregularities.

Over 50% Turnout Casts Votes In By-Elections-Says MEC Chairperson

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says that over 50 percent of the eligible registered voters have casted their vote in the by-elections which are underway in 3 vacant constituency.
Mec Chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale said this at Mileme Polling Station in Phalombe after supervising some centers in Phalombe North, Mangochi West and Mangochi North East.
“Most of the centers have 5 polling stations with more than two thousand registered voters. A couple of the polling stations have about eight hundred plus voters and already they are working on 5th book, every book has got 100 voters that means the turn out is over 50 percent.”

Registered voters in Mangochi West, Mangochi North East and Phalombe North constituencies are voting for their respective members of parliament (MPs) to fill vacnacies created by the the court nullification of thew May 21 2019 parliamentray elections.

In Phalombe North, there  was a long queu at Namanjerema poling centre as early as 5:30am voters waiting for their turn to cast a vote.
The hopefuls are  Mavuto Bokosi (independent but backed by Democratic progressive party -DPP), Promise Salima and Wilfred Lipita all independentd, Esther Kazembe for MCP and Justin Mokuwa for UTM.
