Preparations underway for Senapati Olympic Games

Our Correspondent Imphal, Sep.13 (EMN):  Preparations have started for the golden jubilee celebration cum Olympic Games of Senapati district at Senapati district headquarters,60 km north of Imphal from November 7 to the 12th  this year. The upcoming district Olympic Games will have competitions such as athletics, football(men), basketball(men and female), volleyball(male and female), badminton, tug-of-war and mukna(wrestling). A joint team of Senapati District Wrestling Association, Manipur and Senapati District Olympic Association Manipur called on the Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and discussed the upcoming sports events on Tuesday. In the day’s meeting at the chief minister’s secretariat in Imphal, Singh assured the visiting team that necessary sport infrastructures including the incomplete Sanyi Dahrii Sports Complex at Karong will be completed in the district soon. Veteran Manipur journalist Deven Singh dies aged 75

Our Correspondent Imphal, Sep. 8 (EMN): Nongmaithem Deven Singh, a veteran journalist in Manipur who was popularly known as Khollao Deven, died after a prolonged illness in his ancestral home at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai in Imphal West district. He was 75. Deven Singh survived by his wife and four daughters. He joined the Khollao Daily, a popular newspaper published by the CPI Manipur unit in 1969. He was a founding member of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Manipur Press Club in 1974 and 1975 respectively. He was also the Secretary of CPI Keishamthong Local Committee for several terms after he became a member of CPI in his late sixties. Deven has also worked for popular vernaculars such as Hueiyen Lanpao, Imphal Free Press, an English daily and Matamgi Yakairol besides taking part in other social and sports movement. Manipur governor opens state Olympic Games-2022

Our Correspondent Imphal, Aug.26 (EMN): Manipur Governor, La Ganesan, accompanied by Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, formally opened the 2nd Manipur Olympic Games-2022 at the Mapal Kangjeibung, the world’s oldest polo ground, in Imphal on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, the governor expressed happiness that 34 sports disciplines including indigenous sports disciplines such as Kang and Mukna and about 6000 sports persons are taking part in the Games. Reminding that Manipur has already produced many Olympians and National players, Ganesan said the Government of India endorsed establishment of national sports university in Manipur in recognition of the wonderful performances of the state’s sportspersons. The Governor said Manipur has produced 19 Olympians, one Padma Bhushan awardee, five Padma Shri awardees, 19 Arjuna awardees, three Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardees, one Dronacharya awardee, one Dhyan Chand awardee, 24 Asian Games medalists, and 27 Commonwealth Games medalists. ....
