北川羌族自治县片口乡距离绵阳大约百公里。古时，这里的白草河沿岸生活着白草羌部落，至明清时期这里被称为“石泉番寨”。1935年，红军来到这里设立了片口乡苏维埃政权。在茶马古道作为交通要道的时期，片口乡曾经是北川前往阿坝藏族羌族自治州松潘县茶马古道上的重要集市。
