Maps. at least the area is getting mapped. the question is for phase 2 going forward, who s going to do the searching and who s going to pay for it? think money s a real factor here and i think the way do it properly and economically is to not they can t throw a lot of resources at it. all that can do is throw the right sources at it, which means once the mapping is finished, then one specific kind of understood water vehicle is then used to scan it. that will take months to do that in an area this large. so i think what we ve got to do is clamp down on the expectations. i think it s only realistic now to thing this is going to take years, not months. absolutely. clive, thank you very much. see you again soon. you re welcome. this is just the beginning of the conversation. tonight at 7:00 eastern time we ll devote a half hour to the latest developments in the search and ask the experts what s next and what really happened to flight 370. that s 7:00 tonight on cnn. coming ....

Detected appears to be inconsistent with other data about the position of the plane, but scientists continue to analyze it. it just goes to show they are following up on every possible lead to find wreckage. they re hoping to share their findings sometime in the near future. rene marsh, cnn, washington. the u.s. navy later pulled back from those comments by deputy director of ocean engineering, michael dane, who says the pings were likely a false lead. a navy statement reads mr. dane s comments were speculative and premature as we continue to torque with our partners to more thoroughly understand the data acquired from the towed pinger locator. as a result we would refer to the australians to make additional information known at the appropriate time. today s announcement outlined the next steps. the first is a full mapping of ....

Deep for bluefin-21 to scan for wreckage. the areas north of that ping were too deep for the bluefin. sure. could it be north? absolutely. it could be north. reporter: what s next? reviewing all existing data including inmarsat and satellite data. from there, defining a search area that could be 23,000 square miles along the arc in the south indian ocean. a ship will map the ocean floor in that area preparing for the day private companies are hired to continue the underwater search. so for some perspective, bluefin searched some 230 square smiles. it s going to take about three months for the mapping of the ocean floor in that area and we know that the next phase of searching, when it begins, it will be a long haul. they are estimated it could take ....

The missing malaysian airliner. it is unlikely they are parts of the plane. we have the latest. reporter: a beach goer found a piece of sheet metal three and a half hours south of perth, australia. they don t have concrete evidence as to what happened to the plane. only clues. the four sets of pings the ocean shield heard. but they are ten missions in and unable to find anything of the plane. by the end of this week, it should be finished mapping out the area around the strongest signal, ping number two. after that, move on to more sophisticated technology. particularly the u.s. navy s orion submarine. but for all of the technology, this is just an educated guess. a series of mathematical equations and trial and error that have led them to this point. ....

Peter golds. all right. so when we hear reassessing, it sounds like going back to the draws board. how far back here? well, i think they should go right back to the beginning. i think they need to assemble a new team with fresh eyes to look at the raw data with a completely unbiased approach. see if they come up with the same solutions as the first team. and secondly they re going to have to look towards a longer term search which probably means bringing in total rays and we re in this for the long haul which is not surprising. do you think at this juncture it s worth bringing in new submersibles? oh, absolutely. but i think they need to finish the mapping of this area first. ....
