Is getting down here to use what is called synthetic appature sonar. the big question is what is happening up on the surface. rough waters may get hard to deploy, hard to recover. they want to do a lot of mapping up there like with the hms echo to figure out what they are dealing with before they throw the expensive robots into the water to start searching. tom foreman, thank you so much. let s bring in our panel. jacque is a maritime explorer and miles o brien is a correspondent for pbs news hoho. let s talk about the type of equipment that is on the echo ....

And the depth is crucial to this, too. getting that submersible down there. of course, once they do get that mapping and say they are able to find out where the wreckage is, then you ve got to get recovery vehicles into place. this is something that is not going to happen quickly. this could take months before they re actually bringing anything up. if, indeed, they do find it. and what they re doing at the moment with these pings, and dragging that ping locator around, the multiple pings they get, this isn t a directional device. it just sort of picks up the sound and then they try to get another sound from somewhere else and triangulate it down the way you would with, say, a cell phone or something to try to get a more specific area and then they ll put down the bluefin and try to map it out and see what they can find in terms of wreckage, if it s there. and it could have moved around. been a lot of storms lately in the area, and the like. there s a lot of factors at play, but the opt ....

in terms of the time line now, david gallo, what are we looking for? obviously we know they re continuing to search for any other pings. maximize any opportunity to narrow down this potential field. what sort of and angus houston saying it is likely in very short order that they re going to start to put the autonomous underwater vehicles in. he says he doesn t believe it is that far off from the time they re going to do that. table are we looking at? it depends on what the goals are if they define in detail, it could be anywhere from a week to a month in mapping. but i suspect it would go by quicker than that before they first start to recognize if the aircraft is back there. it could go by much quicker than that. i think in the next week s time you re going to see a vehicle in the water. maybe even three days from now, and then we ll go from there. ....

One-two punch, first, identify the source of the pings and second, send in sonar to physically identify the location. earlier today the australians heading operation ocean shield describing the plan and strategy. if they gain another acoustic event that will be the trigger at the moment to launch the under water vehicle with a more accurate sonar and potentially camera for mapping and visually looking at the ocean floor. at this hour the ntsb lab here in washington dc are standing by ready to handle the black boxes if recovered and under the malaysia authorities who lead the investigation. 1/3 of the world s black boxes are brought here because of the capabilities, though mh-370 presents challenges. the depth and the salt water is corrosive and although these are in a watertight, they get ....

And we re not talking years. van, how long do you think it will take? obviously, the search team has been very, very cautious on this and said it could take weeks and months, even with the information they have for that autonomous vehicle to pick up any debris, if there is debris down there? well, the problem we re going to run into from here on out, the operation will start going slower and slower, at least as we re watching it externally because they have to be incredibly careful. so what they ve announced is they re going to continue to drag the towed pinger locators through the area until there is absolutely no chance of the battery still being alive. so there is several maybe up to a week still of that. if they don t understand the bottom real well, then they re probably going to bring the hms echo over and do a quick map of the ocean bottom from the surface. she is specially built to do that. that will take a couple of weeks. then you ll get the bluefin 21 in the water. and ....
