(Photo courtesy of DA-11) DAVAO CITY - An indigenous peoples (IP) group in Marilog district here has availed of the livestock production package from the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 11 (Davao Region) under the Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa (BP2) program. In a statement Friday, the DA-11 said the Obu-Manuvu Unified Ancestral Domain Tribal Council of Elders/Leaders (OMUADTCEL) received 5,344 heads of upgraded native chickens, 13 units of egg incubators, and 90 heads of upgraded goats. Mahabbok Luis Lambac, chairperson of OMUADTCEL, thanked the agency for the assistance on Thursday and vowed to sustain the project. "With the high demand for chicken meat and egg in the region, I am very thankful to DA for this additional livelihood for our community. We can also provide available and affordable food for everyone," Lambac said. Abel James Monteagudo, DA-11 executive director, said the assistance will enable the IP community to engage in poultry and goat production by supplying chicken meat and eggs in their community and to the local market. "Given the continued strong support of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, (the) DA assures that we will assist our farmers especially the IPs to enable them to recover due to the pandemic," he said. During the turnover, the DA-11, through the livestock program, taught the IPs the proper handling, as well as the advantages and benefits of poultry and goat production. "The Lord's time is the most perfect time," Monteagudo said referring to the assistance they delivered to the IPs. Field Operations Division chief, Marie Ann Constantino, said the project would provide additional income for the IP families. "Amid the [coronavirus disease 2019] pandemic, DA will continue to create more livelihood opportunities and extend technical, financial, and marketing support for our farmers under the BP2 program," said Constantino. The BP2 program aims to decongest Metro Manila and other urban centers and promote growth in the regions. Under the program, recipients would receive government aid such as transportation, cash, and livelihood assistance. The program, contained in Executive Order No. 114 signed by President Duterte in May this year, seeks "to ensure balanced regional development and equitable distribution of wealth, resources and opportunities through policies and programs that boost countryside development and inclusive growth, provide adequate social services, and promote full employment, industrialization and improved quality of life in rural areas."
