WVU, an R-1 flagship…without language degrees or math Ph.D.s?
Some of West Virginia University’s proposed program cuts appear unprecedented, or close to it, for an institution of its kind. Department appeals and student protests seem to be having little effect so far. West Virginia University’s tagline is “Mountaineers go first.” In 2016, it became the state’s only "R-I" university—a prestigious label reserved for those with “very high research activity” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. But WVU may now be achieving less positive firsts.
