Some of West Virginia University’s proposed program cuts appear unprecedented, or close to it, for an institution of its kind. Department appeals and student protests seem to be having little effect so far. West Virginia University’s tagline is “Mountaineers go first.” In 2016, it became the state’s only "R-I" university—a prestigious label reserved for those with “very high research activity” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. But WVU may now be achieving less positive firsts.

MORGANTOWN— During a special meeting of the West Virginia University Board of Governors, officials introduced the next target for reorganization and adjusted the timeline for the review of academic service

Administrators said that programs appealing the Provost’s Office’s preliminary recommendations for changes or discontinuations could face further reductions during a Campus Conversation Thursday.

Of the 25 program units identified by West Virginia University for formal review, 19 have informed the university they will be appealing the preliminary recommendations. Appeals will be heard between Aug. 24 and Sept. 1.
