Two people have been charged for allegedly developing a Ponzi scheme that pulled in $650 million by soliciting investments from victims under false pretenses, including that the victims were investing in cattle.
Defendants raised more than $650 million from investors, who lost tens of millions of dollars.
The indictment states Stachniw, Throgmartin and others solicited hundreds of millions of dollars from investors across the country on false promises the funds would be used for legitimate business activities. They told victims the investments were backed by short-term investments in cattle and promised returns of up to 20% in a matter of weeks, but did not tell investors they were primarily using the funds to repay other investors in a Ponzi-style scheme or to enrich themselves, according to the indictment.
