It’s election day in Bethel, and the polls are open for three different races. There’s the Bethel City Council election, the Lower Kuskokwim School Board election, and the Bethel Advisory School Board election. We’ll walk you through how and where to vote, and who is running. Based on the initial count, the candidates who won seats include incumbent Conrad “CJ” McCormick with 325 votes, incumbent Mark Springer with 276 votes, former council member Eric Whitney with 267 votes, and newcomer Mary “Beth” Hessler with 235 votes. Candidates Jared Karr and Jess Schroeder did not win seats under the initial results.
Mark Springer has sat on city council for three full terms. He also sat for two shorter terms. He’s been in Bethel for about 20 years, and in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta for about 40 years in total. One thread in Springer’s recent city council work has been attention to Native issues and politics.
