The boss of UK travel association ABTA has called on the new British government to freeze the current rate of Air Passenger Duty (APD) to help the sector continue its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. ABTA’s chief executive Mark Tanzer praised the “amazing resilience” of the UK travel industry during his speech to the association’s 2022 convention in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

The UK scrapped its final remaining pandemic travel restrictions in March.

Mark Tanzer, chief executive of sector body Abta, said companies are being hit by higher interest rates on top of rising energy bills.

A poll found adults are more willing to cut back on costs such as clothes shopping and eating out than holidays.

Between July and September, the travel hub was used by more travellers than rivals in cities such as Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.
