New business coming to Fyffe


Sarah Chamlee has been working in the medical field for 13 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Currently, she works as a home health nurse, but is planning to open her own business in the spring. The new business, Americare Plus LLC, will be located at 1105 Main Street in Fyffe.
The business will blend medical supplies and wholistic care remedies.
“I feel our community needs a health and wellness store,” said Chamlee. “The business will offer durable medical equipment not only to the insured, but will also offer reasonable private pay options to those who are uninsured.”
Durable medical equipment includes equipment that promotes mobility and stability. Walkers, knee-scooters, wheelchairs both manual and battery operated, and crutches are among the offerings to be purchased or rented. “A lot of people in their lifetime experience a fall or injury that inhibits walking,” said Chamlee. ....

Upcoming pottery class to be offered


Handbuilding and sculpting pottery is one of the oldest human inventions known to man and yet it is becoming a lost art in today’s modern world. Jessica Haigh is working diligently to keep the art alive. Haigh is a potter who sells a variety of artistic creations, including pottery, at Boom Town Makers Market located at 324 Gault Ave. N in Fort Payne. She will be teaching a pottery handbuilding class at BTMM on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Haigh’s pottery may also be seen on Facebook under “Animalhouse Crafts.” The name “Animalhouse” was derived from the fact that she has four sons and together over the years they have had many types of pets. “Animalhouse seemed an appropriate name for my business because I do my arts and crafts at home where we have had lizards, cats, dogs, pigs, frogs, fish, pigs, and squirrels just to name some of them,” said Haigh. ....

Using just one medium of art doesn't satisfy local artist | At Home


Tahnee Wilbanks has spent most of her life expressing her artistic side with crafts of various mediums. From sewing to molding polymer clay, and everything in between, she finds ways to recycle discarded materials and create desired objects.
“Before I go to a store to make a purchase, I first try to make it at home,” said Wilbanks. “I’ve been doing this ever since I was old enough to use a glue gun.” On one occasion she wanted some pizza earrings and so she figured out how to make them.
On another occasion, a friend wanted to have a Japanese tea party with kimonos and Wilbanks used bed linens to make eight outfits with matching headdresses. The girls wore them during the party and took them home as keepsakes. ....

Passion for painting produces business


Ruthie Stiefel is the owner of Creative Words & Signs by RUTHIE. Stiefel started working as a painter in 1976, at a time when women sign painters were unheard of. Her creativity and determination is what has kept her in the business for more than four decades.
Stiefel said she ran into a lot of raised eyebrows when she first started sign painting because most sign painters were men.
“It took awhile for people to come around to the idea that a woman could do this type of work,” said Stiefel.
Initially, she went door-to-door handing out business cards to advertise her business, but said word of mouth proved to be the strongest avenue of advertisement. ....
