19 Apr 2021 The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) documented the first successful flight of an aircraft over another planet as the Ingenuity helicopter flew 10 feet above the surface of Mars for 39 seconds on Monday. “Ingenuity is the latest in a long and storied tradition of NASA projects achieving a space exploration goal once thought impossible,” acting NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk said in the NASA report. “The X-15 was a pathfinder for the space shuttle. Mars Pathfinder and its Sojourner rover did the same for three generations of Mars rovers. We don’t know...
A piece of Ohio landed on Mars Monday when NASA gave the name of the Wright Brothers to a dusty plain where for the first time, a powered vehicle broke the hold of Martian gravity, rose 10 feet, hovered and safely came back to rest. Mere hours after Monday’s successful test of the helicopter named Ingenuity, NASA Associate Administrator for Science Thomas Zurbuchen christened the ground Wright Brothers Field for the Dayton inventors who first flew a powered aircraft Dec. 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. “Now, 117 years after the Wright brothers succeeded in making the first flig...
Mars helicopter could fly as soon as Monday CNN 2 hrs ago © JPL-Caltech/NASA The Ingenuity helicopter has unlocked and spun its blades in preparation for flight. The Ingenuity helicopter is preparing for its historic flight on Mars Monday if everything goes according to plan. The first powered, controlled flight on another planet will take place at 3:30 a.m. ET on April 19, according to NASA. Unlike when the helicopter's fellow traveler, the Perseverance rover, landed on Mars on February 18, we won't be able to see images or know if it was successful right away. The helicopter team wil...
