The environment. there is a lot of biomass in the environment. there is still shoreline impacts over the next several days. i think we also clearly are on the down side of this thing. and the environment is incredibly resilient. it return to normal. the bacteria out. there they re helping. we re also helping with tropical weather that dispersed residual oil and breaks it into much smaller components. the concentrated oil can t be degraded very fast. dispersed oil can be. and bonnie helped in that respect. stan, do you agree? do you believe that there s been bacteria that is eating the oil? that the soil so dispersed that that s the reason we can t see it? well, there s no doubt that there s action by things like bacteria that can degrade the oil. it s really way too soon to a where all this oil has gone. who knows where it s going to pop-up next. one of the things we re concerned about is oil can get buried in sentiment and work its way under marsh grasses. it may take a lot longer ....

Oil. one is that if it s buried under sentiments and under the marsh grasses, you may have storms that stir up that toxic soup again and that oil re-enters the environment. we learned from the exxon valdez experience where i worked for seven years for the state of alaska that even concentrations of oil as low as parts per billion can reduce survival of the salmon that come out of eggs that were exposed to that oil. do we know if this oil is still in the louisiana marshes? we ve had many of our cnn crews and reporters who have been there who saw all of that oil. and you saw the piece with the fishermen who says there s no life. do we know if that oil is still existing there? well, i i m sure it does. i think it s down in the marshland and it s causing a decrease in the oxygen. that s what he s seeing. the biomass down there uses up the oxygen and causes it to ....

Apparently we lose a football field of marshlands down there every 38 minutes. right. well the best way to protect the marshlands, which are, as you say, hugely critical habitat and ecosystems for so many species. 90% of the species that live in the entire gulf are reliant on those wetlands in coastal louisiana. the best way to protect them is make sure these kinds of oil spills don t happen. national wildlife federation is pushing really hard for clean energy now because if we don t make that transition, we will just see these problems happening well into the future. but the oil is there now. i ve been down to the gulf a couple times now and on my first trip down there about a month ago i went out and oil was just beginning to come in. about four days later i went out to the same spot and the oil was getting just so much more up into the marsh grasses. the problem is once it gets there, it is almost impossible to clean out. if you try to do that you can actually do more harm than go ....

Right now, coming to the gulf coast to be positioned in the bays in the calm waters where they can scoop up the oil before it gets into the marsh grasses? bp has said it s developing a new containment response as they call it, that will help the cleanup operators connect and disconnect oil recovery systems faster. this way, they say they would have fewer disruptions during the storms. is bp moving fast enough on this for you? no. and saying something like that, what, are you going to reduce it from ten days lost to seven days? you re still going to have 420,000 barrels that have gushed unobstructed into the gulf. and as we head into full-blown hurricane season, how concerned are you that this may really be the first of many disruptions to the oil spill response and the cleanup? well, the greatest nightmare ....
