Polish scientists find 1st ever pregnant Egyptian mummy

Ozarek-Szilke speculated that there may have been an effort to “camouflage the pregnancy… or, perhaps, it had some significance related to beliefs and re-birth in the afterlife”.
Based on an analysis of the hieroglyphs on the sarcophagus, the mummy was originally thought to be of a male priest who lived between the first century BCE and the first century CE.
Scientists now believe it could be even older than that and are looking into the possible causes of death.
The mummy has not been opened but one scan showed the woman had long curly hair down to her shoulders.
The research has been published in the latest issue of peer-reviewed Journal of Archaeological Science.

Warsaw: Polish researchers examining an ancient Egyptian mummy that they expected to be a male priest were surprised when X-rays and computer tests revealed instead it was a mummy of a woman who had been seven months pregnant.
The researchers said it’s the world’s first known case of such a well-preserved ancient mummy of a pregnant woman.
The mummy arrived in Warsaw in 1826 and the inscription on the coffin named a male priest. No examination until the current one had disproved the belief that it was a male.
“Our first surprise was that it has no penis, but instead it has breasts and long hair, and then we found out that it’s a pregnant woman,” Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist and archeologist, told The Associated Press. “When we saw the little foot and then the little hand (of the fetus), we were really shocked,”

WARSAW: Polish scientists said on Thursday they have discovered the world’s first pregnant Egyptian mummy while carrying out scans on the 2,000-year-old remains kept at the National Museum in Warsaw.
“My husband Stanislaw, an Egyptian archaeologist, and I looked at the X-ray images and noticed a familiar sight for parents of three children in the belly of the dead woman — a little foot!” Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist and archaeologist at the University of Warsaw, told journalists.
Further analysis revealed the whole foetus and scientists working on the Warsaw Mummy Project believe the woman was between 20 and 30 years old and was 26-30 weeks pregnant.

Journal of Archaeological Science . In it, the researchers write that their X-ray and CT scans of the mummified body show that the woman died when she was between 20-30 years old. They measured the fetus’ head to ascertain how many weeks along the woman was in her pregnancy and found she was between 26 and 30 weeks pregnant when she died.
