KUCHING: Sarawak reported 183 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday (March 16), as well as three deaths and three new clusters. The state disaster management committee said the latest fatalities were men aged 69,72 and 84 with comorbidities such as hypertension, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes. All three passed away at Sibu Hospital on March 15, bringing the state's death toll to 94. Of the new clusters, two are community clusters and one is linked to a workplace. One of the community clusters, dubbed the Nanga Bulo cluster, has 34 confirmed cases to date from three longhouses in the Julau district. "The index case is a 55-year-old woman who tested positive on March 8 at Sibu Hospital while receiving emergency treatment for breathing difficulties, cough and fever.
State Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah (pic) said this included ensuring their staff remain vigilant when they were off duty outside the homes. "We note with concern that the residents and staff of two nursing homes for the elderly in Sibu have contracted Covid-19, particularly as senior citizens are the highest risk group for the disease. "Initial investigations have found that the infections largely originated from staff members who tested positive while outside the institutions. "As such, we want to remind nursing homes to not only comply strictly with SOP within the homes but also give attention to the movement of their staff outside the homes," she told a press conference here on Wednesday (Feb 17).
KUCHING: Six new Covid-19 clusters have been identified in Sarawak, as the state reported 193 new cases and one death on Tuesday (Feb 16). In a statement, the state disaster management committee said two of the new clusters involved nursing homes at Jalan Geronggang and Sungai Merah in Sibu. It said the Geronggang cluster was identified following active case detection after a 77-year-old resident of the home tested positive on Feb 10. "The index case likely contracted the virus from the community while seeking treatment at a medical centre in Sibu. "Contact tracing and active case detection yielded 40 more cases, including two new cases today," the committee said.
