IPs in Maguindanao get banana livelihood from BARMM

IP PLANTATION. Officials of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao-Bangsamoro Board of Investments led by chairperson Ishak Mastura (2nd from right) and indigenous peoples (IP) leaders hold the groundbreaking of a banana plantation for Teduray farmers in Maguindanao on Thursday (Nov. 4, 2021). The livelihood investment is a first of its kind in the province and will benefit the IPs in the area. (Photo from BARMM) COTABATO CITY -Two regional lawmakers in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the region's investment office have pooled resources for the establishment of a banana plantation to provide livelihood for Teduray farmers in the mountains of Maguindanao. On Thursday, the BARMM government started the construction of the banana plantation following the groundbreaking ceremony at Barangay Labungan, Datu Odin Sinsuat town. A joint project of the BARMM's Bangsamoro Board of Investments (BBOI) and the offices of Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Members of Parliament Suharto Ambolodoto and Ministry of Indigenous People's Affairs (MIPA) represented by Deputy MIPA Minister Guialel Abdurahman, an initial five-hectare land area at the Datucampong plantation will be planted with the Cardava banana variety. In the coming months, it is expected that planting of the Cardava variety will expand within the total 50-hectare plantation area of the firm. The BBOI has earlier established the link between the Datucampong firm, a new banana investor, and the Usman banana plantation in Matanog, Maguindanao, for banana plants supplies. The BBOI also will provide the firms with technical assistance or skills on the proper method of planting, as well as help them link their banana products to the market. Lawyer Ishak Mastura, BBOI chair, said this project will encourage more people to go into Cardava planting. "(For the reason that) there is also available market and good income for Cardava," Mastura added. "We are also eyeing future ventures to develop 150 hectares of Cavendish banana plantation here in the area that will generate at least 250 jobs, mostly for the resident farmers," Mastura added. Abdurahman, for his part, acknowledged the BBOI, with assistance from Ambolodto, for its efforts in providing an investment initiative for the indigenous people. (PNA) }

(Photo courtesy of Maguindanao PPO) SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao - Two suspected gunrunners who started selling guns to politicians ahead of next year's political exercises have been arrested here during an entrapment operation, the police said Wednesday. In a report, Col. Jibin Bongcayao, Maguindanao police director, said the suspects were arrested in Sitio Malinis, Barangay Mother Poblacion at 4 p.m. Tuesday. He identified them as Adji Mohaimen Akmad Lumamba and Talib Basagan Manindig, both of Matanog, Maguindanao. "Confiscated from them were one M16 rifle, one 40mm grenade launcher, mobile phones, and the boodle money used in the transaction," Bongcayao said. The suspects, now under the custody of the Shariff Aguak police, are facing charges for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act. Police intelligence reports indicated that among the clients of the suspects are local politicians. "We are digging deeper into the matter," Bongcayao said. Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Eden Ugale, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO-BARMM), lauded the operating units for the arrest of the suspects. "To ensure that loose firearms will not be used as instruments to sow violence in next year's election, PRO-BARMM will remain relentless in its campaign against loose firearms as part of our early preparation for a peaceful and orderly conduct of 2022 elections," Ugale said in a statement. He said the efforts and ingenuity of the Maguindanao police in securing and protecting constituents in the province from illegal acts is worth emulating by other units in the region. (PNA) }

3 provinces, 1 city in BARMM open PhilSys online booking

The Step 2 registration validates demographic data and records biometrics such as photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans. (Photograph courtesy of 553rd EB Facebook) DAVAO CITY - Three provinces and a city in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) are among the latest areas where the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) opened online booking for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) Step 2 process. Marawi City in Lanao del Sur; Cotabato City, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Datu Abdullah Sangki, and Matanog in Maguindanao; and Jolo, Sulu began accepting appointment on September 6, and Isabela City, Lamitan City, and Sumisip in Basilan; and Parang, Sulu on September 28. The Step 2 registration validates the demographic data submitted online and gathers biometrics, such as photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans. A total of 30,043,249 Filipinos have completed their Step 2 registration as of September 9. The PSA said online registration and booking for PhilSys would help ramp up the number of registrants to meet the targeted 70 million to sign up for a national ID. "Online booking of appointments is part of PSA's strategy to ensure that a manageable number of registrants visit a registration center at any time during operating hours, in compliance with health and safety standards of the Department of Health and Inter-Agency Task Force. PSA strongly advises the registrants to follow their chosen schedule to avoid problems with their registration," the PSA said in a statement posted on September 27. The booking system will avoid mass gatherings, one of the policies set by health authorities due to the persisting pandemic. As of September 24, the Philippine Post has 5,024,018 Philippine Identification (PhilID) cards ready for delivery, aside from the 1.9 million already handed door-to-door. Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens. The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts. It also seeks to boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA) }
