Country, at the core of how we deliver levelling up. what is interesting exactly the main announcement that trialed before was unmasking but that s not explicitly one of these cat statement key priorities but that is very much part of how he sees driving forward the economy. it is one thing setting up the economy. it is one thing setting up these priorities, it s another thing setting out a plan and how you are going to deal with them. i think thatis are going to deal with them. i think that is the next stage, and at least today we have some clarity for once, really, around where mr sunak and his administration are really going to be focusing, and it s worth also saying that the nhs priority of cutting wait times is obviously crucial for everyone, cutting wait times is obviously crucialfor everyone, so i think this is a good step forward today, but in a sense, there is going to need to be more flesh on the bones if he is going to bring people with him on this agenda. he if he is going ....

Beyond what has been trailed afraid, beyond what has been trailed and that is the announcement that mr sunak once all pupils in england to study maths in england up to the age of 18 but he accepts it cannot be achieved quickly and while the government will start work on it in this parliament, it will not be able to finish thejob this parliament, it will not be able to finish the job and implement that policy until after the next election, should the conservatives find themselves in power then, but of course the context in which the happening means rishi sunak will have to address the state of the nhs, the strikes in various sectors of the economy, the rising cost of living and small boat crossing is in the channel and more. those are simply issues he cannot be seen to duck, so he will have to set out what he plans to do and how exactly he plans to achieve it at a time of such turmoil and we expect questions after the speech from journalists to the prime minister, so expect all of the p ....

He will definitely face questions on that, i am sure, when he takes questions later today. but i think what we see in the middle of all of this, sort of, firefighting, these crises, rishi sunak is, perhaps, attempting at the beginning of the year to try to set out something that he can give a little bit more of a personal stamp, a bit more of a vision of why he is in thejob and what he might hope to achieve in this longer term. and that s where i think this maths idea comes in. the difficulty is, as you point out, some might look at this and say while this seems a little bit off agenda when there are all of these pressing issues, the strikes, the health service and all the rest. but rishi sunak, downing street say, he certainly believes in the importance of education, the value of the education he got and the fact that less than half of those over 16 who are still at school do any sort of maths and that is very different to countries like america, australia, france, germany, and his vi ....

There. we have been hearing a lot about the nhs, there is a vast amount of data that the nhs has to deal with everyday, and mathematics is incredibly important in that. sorry to come to what level does there need to be an understanding of maths? because when you say 70% of jobs, it s an element of it, it could be a fairly rudimentary level, can t it? ,, , . ., , ., can t it? students certainly need to know how mathematics can t it? students certainly need to know how mathematics can - can t it? students certainly need to know how mathematics can be i can t it? students certainly need to i know how mathematics can be relevant to their lives. to do that, you need, as well as understanding gcse, you need to keep that knowledge going post gcse and one of the problems with dropping maths at gcse, which is what the majority of students do in the uk, is that you are not keeping that knowledge going. what we are proposing, is not that every student should do a level maths, but every student ....
