Draft curriculum including coding and robotics to be gazetted: Ramaphosa

The president congratulated the class of 2020 for an overall pass rate of 76.2%  in the national senior certificate examinations, saying it was an outstanding achievement considering the huge disruption caused to the academic year by the coronavirus pandemic.
He also expressed his gratitude to minister Angie Motshekga and her team and all the stakeholders and partners in the education fraternity. “Thanks to their resilience, tenacity and persistence, we were able to salvage the academic year. Our educators, like our health professionals, gave of their best this past year. They displayed the utmost professionalism in going to teach despite the risks.”
He said SA was deeply saddened by the teachers lost to Covid-19. “We pay tribute to them and, once again, extend the sympathies of the entire nation to their families and colleagues. As we reflect on the past year, with all its hardship and difficulty, our greatest congratulations go to our matriculants.”

DA says the 'real' matric pass rate is 44.1%, not 76.2%

Nodada said the Western Cape had the highest real pass rate at 55.8%, and that the national real pass rate had increased by 5.2 percentage points from 2019.
He also criticised the overburdened curriculum, lack of infrastructure and inadequate support for teachers, saying these were not problems that arose with the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Unless the minister and the department urgently engage with stakeholders to address these failures, the true matric pass rate will plummet - to the detriment of our children and all our futures. This generation deserves better than perpetual poverty.”

Speaking on Jacaranda FM, basic education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga hit back at the DA’s claims, saying the party’s analysis was “narrow-minded” and “disappointing”.

Inside scoop: Matric 2020 pass rate dips amid Covid, single exam sitting for progressed pupils

A disturbing feature of the exams was that there were 15,000 fewer candidates writing maths compared to 2019.
“It's really tragic and it all boils down to gatekeeping, where weaker pupils are persuaded to write maths literacy instead of maths. This is also directly related to this competition that has been created between schools and between provinces,” said the source.
Academics previously told TimesLIVE that the pass rate would also dip because progressed candidates (those who were progressed to grade 12 despite failing grade 11) had to write all seven subjects at one exam sitting for the first time last year.
Over the past few years, progressed pupils were allowed to write some subjects in October/November and the remainder in June the next year through a system known as the Multiple Exam Opportunity (MEO).
