The political system established under the Good Friday Agreement (1998) has now been in place for 23 years. When compared to the one-party sectarian state ruled by the Unionist Party (until 1972) and to direct rule from London (until 1998) this system is the most consensual, democratic govt in the history of the state. When compared to what is necessary and possible, however, it is not a positive political settlement but a postponement, based on avoidance of something worse - a return to conflict.
