INCREASED ENROLLMENT. The Department of Education (DepEd) 5 (Bicol) is expecting about 1.8 million learners for School Year 2022-2023. (PNA file photo by Gil Calinga) LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Education (DepEd) 5 (Bicol) is expecting about 1.8 million learners for School Year (SY) 2022-2023. In an interview on Thursday, DepEd-5 spokesperson Mayflor Marie Jumamil said almost 400,000 children have been registered since the list-up began on Monday. "This is an indication of the eagerness of the parents and learners to go back to face-to-face (F2F)," Jumamil said. DepEd-5 data showed that 366,114 learners have pre-registered, composed of 23,475 for Kindergarten; 690 for non-graded covering the learners with special needs; 163,352 for elementary; 125,620 for junior high school; and 52,977 for senior high school. Jumamil said vaccination is not a requirement for enrollment but parents are encouraged to have their kids inoculated against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). "Parents have three choices to enroll their children - onsite, remote, or in drop-box form," she noted. For remote enlistment, parents can access the enrollment form or the Enhanced Basic Education Enrollment Form (EBEEF) digitally and email them to the school while the dropbox is available at barangay halls or strategic locations near the school, where the EBEEFs are also available. "Those opting for in-person enrollment should observe the safety health protocols, such as wearing of face mask, non-contact temperature check, frequent hand washing or use of alcohol, and physical distancing," Jumamil said. DepEd-5 is expecting an increased number of enrollees this coming school year, considering that the movement restrictions had been relaxed and the five-day face-to-face classes will start on November 2. "Transition period will be until October or before the start of the five days per week," Jumamil said. Parents or guardians have been advised to bring the enrollees' birth, baptismal, or barangay certificates showing their date of birth, the correct spelling of their names, and those of their parents. The enrollment runs until August 22. (PNA) }

Bicol educators join DepEd's learning recovery program

LEGAZPI CITY - More than 200 early grade teachers and education program officials from the Bicol Region are now undergoing orientation and training on the learning recovery curriculum for the school year 2022-2023, the Department of Education-Bicol (DepEd-5) on Wednesday said. Mayflor Marie Jumamil, DepEd-5 spokesperson, said the agency is now fast-tracking the regional training of trainers (RTOT) to the 13 division training teamsthat will take the lead in cascading the curriculum to all early grade teachers. Asked if it is part of the preparation for the face-to-face (F2F) classes, Jumamil said: "We can say yes because in the learning recovery plan (LRP), F2F modality of learning is also considered." She also noted of the F2F transition phase before its full implementation in November. In a statement, Joan Lagata, LRP regional coordinator, said after the RTOT, all schools division offices (SDOs) through the division training team will also conduct their division or cluster LRP orientation training for Grades 1 to 3 teachers. "This will be held before the school opening this August 2022 to sufficiently prepare schools for the implementation of the eight-week Learning Recovery Program, including the reproduction of the program and curriculum guides, assessment tools, and learning materials," she said. Lagata noted that the RTOT is designed to develop effective resource persons who will be responsible for training and assisting teachers in the various teaching strategies in Mother Tongue, English, Filipino, and Mathematics as part of the contextualized curriculum. It also aims to equip trainers with the capacity to facilitate the efficient use of the learning materials and gain a deeper understanding of DepEd Bicol's 8-Week Learning Recovery Curriculum as a significant part of the region's learning recovery plan. DepEd Bicol's LRP, dubbed "Recovering for Academic Achievement by Improving Instruction through Sustainable Evidence-Based Learning Programs (RAISE)", is a three-year learning scheme conceptualized to help the learners catch up and accelerate their education after two years of learning disruption due to coronavirus disease (Covid-19) health crisis. The agency said the main goal is not only to bring all learners back to school but to organize effective remedial learning, support their well-being, train teachers, fill digital divides and equip youth with the skills for work. "The plan will give more attention to the literacy and numeracy skills of the learners who were highly impacted by lockdowns and self-learning approach employed during the pandemic," DepEd Bicol said. The training is done in two batches that started early this week for the first batch, while the second batch will be on July 21-23. DepEd-5 is currently mapping learners who will undergo the 8-Week Learning Recovery Curriculum based on the results of the end-of-the-school-year comprehensive rapid literacy assessment and EOSY numeracy assessment. Early grade learners will undergo a series of activities during the school opening this August that include assessments in Mother Tongue, English, Filipino, and Mathematics to determine specific macro-skills difficulties (pre-test) in Week 1. The implementation of the 8-week Learning Recovery Curriculum in Weeks 2 to 9, and assessments in the four main subjects to determine progress in literacy and numeracy skills (post-test) in Week 10. (Photo courtesy of Ma. Cristina G. Baroso/ESSD ROV) LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Education in Bicol (DepEd-5) on Thursday extended a PHP667,800 assistance, the second tranche of support for schools in Eastern Visayas (Region 8), that were severely affected by Typhoon Odette last December. DepEd-5 spokesperson, Mayflor Marie Jumamil, told the Philippine News Agency that officials from their regional office flew to Leyte to personally hand over the assistance. "The first tranche of support of PHP2.2 million, was already transferred to DepEd Region 8 through the Philippine Association of Schools Superintendent (PASS). The assistance will be part of the response, rehabilitation, and recovery efforts for learners and schools from the said area," Jumamil said. During the turnover, she said DepEd-5 Regional Director Gilbert Sadsad enjoined 13 School Divisions Offices (SDOs) in the region to back a support system initiated by the Office of the Undersecretary for Administration (OUA) for schools damaged by Typhoon Odette. DepEd-5 conducted a mobilization effort from February 22 to March 8 for the implementation of the activities under the system including the conduct of Brigada Eskwela for the immediate repair of minor damage to classrooms and other school facilities; provision of materials for the construction of Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS); and the conduct of Psychological First Aid (PFA) to the typhoon victims. DepEd-Bicol sees more schools opening F2F classes

DepEd-5 Director Gilbert Sadsad. (File photo) LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Education in Bicol (DepEd-5) said it has started to open face-to-face (F2F) classes in the region and is expecting more schools to join. Mayflor Marie Jumamil, DepEd-5 spokesperson, in a message sent to the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday, said they are seeing an increase in the number of schools that will implement limited F2F classes if the region will stay under Alert Level 2 community quarantine status. However, she said the opening of in-school classes is not simultaneously done in at least 1,029 schools across Bicol. "May nag-start na, may next week. Hindi po sabay sabay pero within this month mag-start sila. (Some have started, others will start next week. It is not simultaneous but it will be this March)," Jumamil said. She said more schools have intended to open their doors to students and are currently preparing and complying with the required assessment. In a statement, DepEd-5 Director Gilbert Sadsad said all expansion schools have passed the School Safety Assessment Test (SSAT) and complied with the interim guidelines on the expansion of limited F2F classes set by the DepEd central office. Under the guidelines, schools are required to pass the standards of the SSAT, be in areas under Alert Levels 1 and 2, obtain the local government unit's concurrence, and have acquired the written consent of parents or guardians of the learners intending to participate, and coordinate with respective barangays for collaborative implementation of the onsite learning modality. As of February 24, there are already 986 public schools and 43 private schools allowed to join the progressive expansion of the limited F2F classes in the region. Sadsad said some teachers have dry runs and orientation meetings with parents, local government units (LGUs), and other stakeholders on the operational dynamics and interplay between distance learning and face-to-face classes. Other schools have also conducted Brigada Eskwela to prepare the school facilities for the safe re-opening of classes. He also noted there are schools that are currently under SSAT validation of the Department of Health and are also requesting approval from the regional office and their respective LGUs.
